A big fat Thank You

December 17th, 2004 at 10:08 am by Preston Taylor Holmes

You only have a day or two left to compose a thank you letter to the troops. Slaglerock is shooting for a final push by Sunday, so if you’re a procrastinator like me, get on with it. For details, go read Slaglerock’s Letter Project post here.

If you’re a blogger, make sure you trackback to his post. You certainly don’t have to be a blogger to participate – just go to his site and post your letter in his comments, and they’ll get there. The text of my letter here:

Dear Soldier,

It’s times like this when words don’t come easy.

Like many Americans, my family and I go about our daily lives worrying about things that are truly meaningless in comparison to your commitment and struggle to defend us.

While we move from one trivial matter to another, you stand between us and a fanatical death-cult bent on world-domination through slaughter. It’s an enemy unlike any we’ve ever faced, and you have shown the raw courage and true heroism to take it on – and annihilate it.

It’s because of your sacrifice that the rest of us get to enjoy the freedoms that America affords. Like the veterans of previous world wars, you’re the ones doing the important work – you continue to pull the cart in which the rest of us ride in comparative luxury.

As we go about our daily lives – many of us do think about you and pray for your safety. We don’t do it often enough, but we should try to do it as often as we can.

I think about those of you who have had children and not yet met them. I think about those of you who won’t get to hug your kids this Christmas eve. When I get a big hug from my kids, I’ll damn sure say a prayer that you make it home soon to do the same with your loved ones.

So from my family, we say THANK YOU and we appreciate your selflessness more than words can possibly express. God bless you and your families.

Respectfully,
Preston Taylor Holmes & Family

I could not put it better myself. I am on my way to compose a letter as soon as I am done commenting here at the newly remedeled buffet.

Well written! Thanks for your help and participation. These letters will brighten the day of many troops abroad.

I hope so, Slaglerock. It seems so insignificant by comparison, but hopefully it will help out in some small way.
