Trackback spam
February 1st, 2005 at 8:10 am by Preston Taylor HolmesI was hoping that Spam Karma would help me with Trackback spam, but no dice. Do any of you nice WordPress folks know how to shut down trackbacking altogether while I get this new spam flood figured out? What a pain in the ass.
FYI: Right now all comments and trackbacks are shut down. If you have something you think I should link to or something incredibly clever or urgent, just shoot me an email. I’ll get comments and trackbacks re-enabled as soon as I figure out why trackbacks aren’t getting eaten by the spam eater.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Okay, comments are back up for recent posts. If you notice that they’re suddenly disabled, you’ll know why. Still don’t have a cure for the trackback spam, yet, so any advice is welcome. I hope whoever does all this blog spamming gets something incredibly painful lodged in their colon and can’t get it out for weeks.

I haven’t had a problem with “trackback” spam as of yet–or at least Spam Karma has blocked most of it.
You can always edit your php coding to change the file “wp-comments-post.php” to something else–b/c the spammers are looking for that file. You then have to change all references to that file in Wp-Comments.php. Since you don’t use popup comments, I think that’s all you have to do.
It works for a while, and then the spammers figure it out–so you have to change it again.

Thanks Jeremy – I may try that once I verify that my SK settings are correct.

Spent almost an hour this morning deleting nearly 200 such trackbacks all from “online poker” and “texas holdem.” They’ve both been added to my blacklist and I encourage you to do the same.
I’d sendem a bill if only I knew where. And I’d charge my top daily rate …
