FillyBluster
June 11th, 2005 at 8:38 pm by Preston Taylor HolmesThere’s an interesting discussion going on round the right-o-sphere on what is usually a quiet blogday (weekends are usually pretty sleepy in Blogistan…).
Captain “Not One Dime” Ed whacked a hornet’s nest earlier by examining a history of the filibuster, citing it as a contributor to the continuation of lynching in the South. I believe this was supposed to serve as evidence of why eliminating the filibuster is a good idea today.
While I’ve been pretty vocal about my disgust with the GOP and the Sellout Seven, this rationalization is a pretty huge – and unnecessary – stretch.
Several other notables have taken exception to the Captain, including the Commissar and the Bamapachyderm herself. I have to agree with both of them in that dredging up lynching and race issues in the discussion of the McCain Mutiny is not only out-of-place, but borders on the same kind of race-baiting we’re used to by the Sharptons and Jacksons of the world. Race-baiting is race-baiting, no matter who uses the disgusting technique.
This doesn’t change the fact that I still completely agree with the Captain’s “Not One Dime” pledge and his general anger with the limp-wristed GOP majority and more specifically, the Sellout Seven. I don’t think he has to defend his position by digging up the ugly history of the racist South to defend the use of the “nuclear option”. Then again, he is from Minnesota – maybe it was just a clever way to take another pot-shot at us inbred Southerners without getting called on the carpet for it….
UPDATE:
Cao has an interesting take – says Captain Ed is just “a man who acts like a man.” I will agree with Cao – I’d rather Captain Ed blog when he’s angry and filled with passion – it makes for great reading, even if it does result in some over-the-top commentary from time-to-time. I’ve been known to engage in a bit of over-the-top ranting myself…. so who am I to throw stones? Cao also rightfully reminds us that it was the Dim-O-Crack party who opposed civil rights legislation, not the GOP.

Dude, I’m originally from California – greater LA area. You can imagine the jokes that gets. For good reason.
Lynching, I’m reminded, is not just a Southern tradition, and I’ll post an update to reflect that.

You Mean The Filibuster Isn’t The Center Of The Republic? (Updates Galore)
I want to note that the phrase “quaint Southern tradition” is unfair; lynching was a “quaint American tradition”, as a number of people have told me via e-mail and comments, including a few here in the Upper Midwest. Six Meat Buffet weighs in on t…

A Shocking Omission
The US Senate is about to pass a resolution apologizing for its failure to pass a law against lynching — as first proposed by President McKinley over a century ago. Why the delay? Senate filibusters, part of that proud tradition…

Whiskey Sexy
You gotta love a man who acts like a man, and Captain Ed plainly said in this post that maybe he shouldn’t blog when he’s angry. Oh, c’mon now, Captain–to you I say: Whiskey, whiskey, sexy, sexy!
Ok. With that off my chest–while recently Emm…
