I have had the opportunity to read some of Jonah Goldberg’s attempts at responding to the question of why he has not signed up. In every case, he has rambled all around the subject, repeating the peripheral refrain that one can support the war without serving. Of course one can- if one is too old, too young, or is mentally or physically unable to do so. In this regard, he brings a knife to a gunfight.

I would like to see some valid reasons here other than:

I have a wife and kids. I can’t get off work. Mom (Lucianne) says I can’t go.

You are assuming a lot, but you are correct; I did not serve in Iraq. However, after being unable to get into the National Guard in 1967, since it was already full of the local dignitaries’ sons, I volunteered for the draft. It was the year before the lottery system was put in place.

I did not go, because of a birth defect involving a benign tumor attached to my spinal cord. I was not rejected, but was classified 1-Y and sent home. I was willing, and could have served in a support capacity, even in a hospital or something similar, since I had training in microbiology and histology.

My brother was accepted and served, returning voluntarily for a second tour. He got a real Purple Heart and other commendations.

What I am getting at is that you guys (and girls, too) have been put in this predicament by our misguided leaders whose only expertise in the conduct of war comes from graduate seminars at Yale, strategy sessions at AEI, and idle banter at beltway cocktail parties between business leaders and politicians. Soldiers, to them, are factors of production in pursuit of their dreams.

You need to get your thoughts together on this issue, because the opposition has spotted it on the radar and will be coming soon.

So…serving as enlisted, and an officer is the only way to prove that I can approve of anything?

because, not only did I re-enlist, I actually fought in this war. I was there. you weren’t, Mr. SemiPundit. since you weren’t there, you can’t say anything.

unless you were there, in which case, you can’t say anything, because you’re biased. or something.

I’m still – STILL – trying to figure out how a position on an issue is made by one’s former involvement in said activity. just because you played baseball in high school does not make you a World Series winning manager.

This could well be the next serious problem for the administration and its supporters. There are very few valid reasons for supporting the Bush policy but not serving. Jonah Goldberg is, of course, an exception.
