Donate

It’s a pretty helpless feeling watching the devastation in the gulf coast. However, there are plenty of places to donate – and every little bit helps.
I recommend The Salvation Army. Their online donation form is bombing out right now, but you can do it by phone as well (1-800-SAL-ARMY). The American Red Cross is also a good one – and they are NOT to be confused with the International Red Crescent, who I can’t personally endorse. Their online donation page is also taking a big hit, so use their phone if necessary (1-800-HELP-NOW).
The Blogfather has a good round-up of other ways to give. Read the whole thing.
I will note that Doctors Without Borders, an organization that I donated to after last December’s tsunami, has made no mention of the disaster. Also, I tried to find the United States in their “Select Country” drop-down list. No dice. It seems that they should change their name to “Doctors Without Borders Except For The Borders Around The United States.”

UPDATE:
Apothegm Designs has come up with a creative way to help – they’re auctioning off a free blog design to the highest bidder – the winning bid, of course, goes to hurricane relief.
UPDATE 2:
This post has been tweaked and will be pegged to the top of the blog tomorrow as part of TTLB’s Hurricane Katrina: Blog for Relief Day.
See the Blogfather’s blogger round-up. He’s handing out Instalanches like Christmas cookies! Now that’s charity!
UPDATE 3:
Johnny Walker Red is back! You may remember him from the brilliant, but now defunct, Right on Red. I offered him a login quite some time ago and he’s finally used it. Let’s hope this isn’t a one-time appearance.

Kudos on your efforts to bring relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. There is another way bloggers and other thoughtful people can help:
I have opened forums at http://www.DisasterReliefIdeas.org for the discussion of ideas to aid disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I am not soliciting donations, only ideas. Experts in aspects of disaster relief (housing, healthcare, rebuilding, etc.) are also able to rate these ideas, giving us a means of identifying the most promising ones, which will be shared with disaster relief professionals and persons in authority. Please help our society by contributing your ideas, especially if you are unable to contribute financially to relief efforts.
