Sigh…

September 9th, 2005 at 8:20 pm by Johnny Walker Red

Part of what sucks about having a political climate so caustic is that when you try to see the other side’s perspective and do an honest and fair job of assessing a situation, you get slapped. Since my initial Katrina posts, I’ve got some of Preston’s regulars thinking I’m a lefty. If criticizing the President’s handling of the New Orleans debacle makes me a pinko, then I suppose Charles Krauthammer is, too.

But I’m glad to let Preston’s readers know that ol’ JWR has been convinced. I am now in full-tilt smack-the-libs mode, when it comes to Katrina (I was already in that mode on every other issue, and always have been). My change of heart in this is due in part to the work of Goldstein lately, who has blogged about the Constitutional issues involved, in a way that I had not quite considered in the first week of the disaster.

But also, I have a liberal friend. I’m talking about one Noam-loving sonofagun. I love the misguided bastard. But hearing him blather on about the Federal response to Katrina, and seeing the Congressional Dems winding up the Official Patented DNC Righteous Indignation Machine, I have no choice but to circle the wagons.

It would be nice if, in the United States of America, we could look at a gigantic calamity and determine what went wrong, to avoid something like that happening again. But the Left will have none of that. So I say, give ‘em enough rope.

So to all of you who know me (and you both know who you are) – rest easy. JWR is on board. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

PS: Just saw the opening of the big benefit concert. At least they did the first segment right, with Newman. But then Bono . . . the ridiculous following the sublime.

One love?

Yeah right.

I think there’s more than enough blame to go around on this on all levels of government, but it needs to be put in perspective. At the most, the President is guilty of appointing a shitheel to FEMA. And maybe of not being as public about his following of the situation in New Orleans has he should have been.

Outside of that, you have to look at the local authorities. Had they done their jobs Katrina could well have been “just another hurricane.” Notable for its property destruction and loss of life, but nowhere near the catastrophe it is now.

I think the MoveOn crowd and other liberal twits who are using this issue as the “cause of the day” to bash Bush with are going to prevent us from learning about what went wrong with Katrina. Instead of focusing in on that which is most responsible (corrput local officials, pork barrel spending, inadequate disaster preparedness, an unwillingness to force people from their homes in the face of danger) these nuts are focusing on the President (and trying to tie everything in to the war on Iraq). Not so much because it will help us avoid another Katrina, but because its an opportune moment to bash Bush.

    Lefty? No.

But you are a rat bastard.

    Bastard.
