Football Friday

October 7th, 2005 at 12:30 pm by Preston Taylor Holmes

I know a lot of you – well, maybe one of you – missed Football Friday last week. As a result, you probably did better in your respective betting pools. Well, it’s back this week and there are some signs that things are getting back to normal in the world of semi-pro ball.

First of all Vandy tanked AT HOME to a winless MTSU. Ole Miss laid down to Tennessee last week like one of those Vol Hostesses on a big recruiting weekend. Or really, any Chi-O at a weekend mixer. Alabama is competing for SEC championships again. Things are getting back to normal – at least in the SEC.

I’ll be at tomorrow’s Tennessee/Georgia game (3:30 pm ET, CBS) and plan to take my shitty Sony digital camera and get some shots to share with you fine folks. I have a feeling this is another pick from the heart instead of the head, but I like the Vols, 26-20. If there was ever a chance for Georgia to pound our eyes shut, it was last year in Athens – not this year when they’ve lost so many starters. The only problem is that Neyland Stadium will likely be filled with nothing but octogenarians who tell those around them to “sit down and be quiet” because they’re watching the game. This is why Neyland doesn’t intimidate opponents – and it won’t until there is some serious season-ticket turnover or the “sit down and shut up” elderly get so frustrated that they stop going to the games. Either one would work for me. Elsewhere…

  • Texas 34 Okla 19 – For most of this decade, you could count on Texas losing to the Sooners. Not this year, sadly. This also means that Texas will probably run the table and we’ll see a Texas/USC national championship. Bleah.
  • Penn St. 29 Ohio St 25 – Night game. Should be fun to watch. The Nittany Lions will be fired up for this home game, especially now that they don’t suck.
  • S. Carolina 37 Ky 17 – Spurrier finally gets a snack cake on which to unleash his horrifying aerial assault.
  • LSU 77 Vanderbilt 3 – Yep, things are getting back to normal in the SEC.

Last week in the pros, I was 3/5, which is slightly better, but still an F. While the season is essentially over for the Titans, I like us to go to Houston and get a win, 23-17. Of course I couldn’t have been more wrong last week, so who the hell knows. The Texans still have my favorite logo in the NFL, though, which makes this game tough. In the era of free agency, you’re really just rooting for a uniform and a logo with interchangeable players, so, consequently, the Texans should be my favorite team. But I digress. Elsewhere…

  • Indy 34 San Fran 6 – Alex Smith against the vastly-improved Colts’ defense? I don’t think so.
  • Atl 24 NE 22 – Has the potential to be a really good game. Ron Mexico pulls it out in the end. Pun intended.
  • Phil 33 Dal 21 – I hate both of these teams. Wish the game could end in a 0-0 tie and scores of season-ending injuries.
  • Den 29 Wash 21 – The Redskins are due a loss. Plus their logo offends me.

Hey now….let’s show the love for the Redskins here…I love the logo. Of course, I’ve been a Skins fan for years now.
