When in Doubt, Attack Your Own Base

October 12th, 2005 at 10:27 am by Preston Taylor Holmes

I don’t think the message is getting through to the White House, if they’ve lowered themselves to using the “sexist” defense to attack Harriet’s critics.

COVINGTON, Louisiana (Reuters) – First lady Laura Bush joined her husband in defending his nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday and said it was possible some critics were being sexist in their opposition to Harriet Miers.

“That’s possible, I think that’s possible,” Mrs. Bush said when asked on NBC’s “Today Show” whether criticism that Miers lacked intellectual heft were sexist in nature. She said Miers’ accomplishments as a lawyer made her a role model to young women.

Mrs. Bush, who had publicly supported the nomination of a woman to the high court, noted that Miers had been president of the Texas Bar Association.

“I know Harriet well, I know how accomplished she is, I know how many times she’s broken the glass ceiling herself. She is a role model for young women around our country,” she said.

The White House continues to miss the point. But then again, that’s their standard operating procedure when it comes to domestic policy. Hauling out Laura to fling lefty accusations at Harriet’s opponents is a new one, however. Captain Ed notes that the First Lady is just continuing on with Ed Gillespie’s talking points from last week.

Let’s not forget that the same White House sent Ed Gillespie out with this same message just a few days ago.

After Gillespie made that accusation, the White House has had ample time to disavow his statement. So far, I haven’t seen a retraction or an apology.

The whole thing would be hilarious if I wasn’t convinced that Miers is a lock for confirmation. And that’s a shame.

[...] Regardless of what side of the Miers issue you take, the current move by the White House to even hint that those that oppose the nomination may be doing so for sexist reasons is just plain foolish. Apparently we are not the only thinking about this either as Six Meat Buffet hits on similar points in their post – When In Doubt, Attack Your Base. I understand Karl Rove, the president’s main political guru, is tied up with the grand jury over the Valerie Plame case, but that did not mean that the White House had to go hire James Carville to consult. Try one of these specials with your supper: Raven (And Rightly So!) remembers the Cole. Balance Sheet says the MSM rufuses to connect the dots. CENTCOM has the Zawahiri-Zarqawi letter in English and Arabic. Daisy Cutter says enough with Harriet.
