The Brothers War

October 23rd, 2005 at 3:05 am by Smantix

Something wicked has crawled up George Will’s ass. It may be contagious. More than enough other people have and are continuing to fire off about this inexplicable and undeserving nominee. Conservatives are going to have to stand up to Bush on Miers or consign themselves to losing 2006 and 2008. And it’s really that simple. Some folks are trying to say it nicely and other people are more direct. And away we go:

George Will:

As for Republicans, any who vote for Miers will thereafter be ineligible to argue that it is important to elect Republicans because they are conscientious conservers of the judicial branch’s invaluable dignity. Finally, any Republican senator who supinely acquiesces in President Bush’s reckless abuse of presidential discretion — or who does not recognize the Miers nomination as such — can never be considered presidential material.

Chuck Krauthammer:

It’s no secret that I think the Harriet Miers nomination was a mistake. Nonetheless, when asked how she will do in her confirmation hearings, my answer is, I hope she does well. I have no desire to see her humiliated. Nor would I take any joy in seeing her rejected, though I continue to believe it would be best for the country that she not be confirmed to the Supreme Court.

Sen. Lindsey Graham has been a staunch and public supporter of this nominee. Yet on Wednesday he joined Brownback in demanding privileged documents from Miers’s White House tenure.

Finally, a way out: irreconcilable differences over documents. (my emphasis)

The nancyboys over at NRO have officially stomped their foot twice. And this time they mean it:

There is no good reason to keep going down this road other than the sheer stupid force of inertia, i.e. this is the nomination, so we’re stuck with it. Indeed, if Senate Republicans and conservative lawyers were being candid about their views of this nomination, it probably would already have sunk. This moment calls for leadership from Republican senators, who should go to the White House and insist that this nomination will not work and should be withdrawn. The White House is too insulated and reflexively defensive (note President Bush’s pique yesterday when asked about criticism of Miers) to figure this out on its own. Is this a difficult message for anyone to deliver?
[...]
It is understandable that Republican senators want to be loyal to an embattled administration. But what the president needs most right now is friends, friends who will do him the service of telling him the truth, even when it’s inconvenient.

If somebody’s about to walk off the edge of a cliff and you grab them by the belt loop, you might expect a little gratitude.

Us: “Hey, Asshole, we just kept you from walking off that cliff.”

Asshole: “And I appreciate your service to your country. But that cliff is mighty attractive and by the way, did I mention that I’m going to push for blanket amnesty for illegal aliens while all of this other shit is going on?”

It’s a long, painful skid down the face of a jagged mountain if the White House sticks with this Miers nomination. If Republicans lose either the Senate or the House, there will be special prosecutors and independent counsels investigating every little incident from 2006 to 2008. And does anyone doubt that impeachment will be brought up if there is even the slightest majority in either house?

I not only oppose the Miers nomination. I will not support anyone who votes for her in the next election.

Do you hear me Frist and Alexander?

One of my senators is Joe Biden, who I’d never support anyway, so that threat would ring pretty hollow coming from me, even if he did acknowledge my existence.
