No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
November 2nd, 2005 at 4:03 pm by Preston Taylor HolmesWay back when the plight of New Orleans was plastered all over the news and evacuees were being bused to the Astrodome, I said that Houston was in trouble.
In addition to the layabout population being bused to Houston to leech off of another municipal government, Houston was getting an influx of new criminals. Any town bringing in busloads of evacuees better have taken steps to expand their police force as well. Sure, not all the evacuees are criminals, but you can bet your ass that the ratio of criminals to the overall evacuee population is higher than the ratio in the general population.
Unfortunately, one of the consequences of trying to help those who have no interest in helping themselves came home to roost for Betty Blair of Pasadena, Texas as she was robbed and killed by three of these “evacuees” – one from New Orleans and two from Beaumont, TX.
Betty Blair, 77, was strangled to death inside her Pasadena home Friday and her bound body was discovered by her daughter Friday evening, said Pasadena Police spokesman Vance Mitchell.
Three suspects — all described as hurricane evacuees — were arrested Friday evening after police located the dead woman’s missing car through its OnStar electronic tracking system, Mitchell said.
The three had been hired by Blair to do odds jobs around her home, including cutting her grass, Mitchell said.
“Unfortunately, it looks like her good will cost her her life,” Mitchell said.
They met Blair when they sought help from St. Pius V Catholic Church in Pasadena, where she volunteered in the church’s food pantry.
It’s a damn shame when good people with good hearts allow their intentions to override good sense. Helping out is great, just keep your distance.

Society would have been better served if these three
had been found floating in Lake Ponchatrain

At least there was good diversity represented there among the killers! The Multicultural Diversity Crowd is probably glad to see that!
