Bad News from Iraq

December 15th, 2005 at 8:29 am by Preston Taylor Holmes

Turnout high, violence low thus far in the Iraqi parliamentary election. This seems to be holding true with Sunni voters as well, who have historically been reluctant to get on board. Good news for a fetal Iraqi representative government, but bad news for Katie Couric.

Despite a series of isolated violent incidents across Iraq, voters have turned out in large numbers for what looked set to be the country’s most peaceful election so far.

The relative calm surrounding today’s poll contrasted sharply with the January 30 vote for an interim assembly, during which about 40 people were killed.

In another important contrast with earlier votes, Sunni Arabs today appeared determined to have more say in government, ending their boycott of the electoral process.

In related news, Jimmy Carter has already declared today’s Iraqi election illegal, unconstitutional and uncertified.

This is a good place to follow Iraqi election news from folks on the ground in Iraq.

    Iraqi Elections

Well it seems that the worst thing possible for the those that oppose the war has occurred, the Iraqi people have turned out in great numbers, there has been little violence, and people seem to be embracing democracy and freedom.

High Turnout In Iraqi Election, Violence Low

Freedom and democracy are on the march… Iraqis voted in a historic parliamentary election Thursday, with strong turnout reported in Sunni Arab areas and even a shortage of ballots in some precincts. Because of the large turnout, the Iraqi election…

Sorry, but it is illogical for those who are opposed to the war to see these elections as bad news.

    Here’s the math.

Opposed to the war = want to get US out of Iraq

Iraq elections that lead to a stable democractically elected goverment = the US getting out of Iraq earlier than later

    Therefore

Iraq elections that lead to a stable democratically elected government = good thing to those opposed to the war.

I frankly can’t think of any American of good will – despite their political leanings – seeing the elections as anything other than a good thing. And moreover, the only people I see calling this bad news are, well, you guys… I know you’re being sarcastic… but sarcasm really only works, in the long run, for professional wrestling, not politics…

I think you are subsumed by the myth of “them”… There realy is no “them” except in your imaginations….

Let’s make this an open trackback. Post your links to other stories about the historical Iraqi election.

Thanks for the lesson in how sarcasm should and should not be used.

Please keep us informed on how best to use other writing elements, parts of speech, syntax, etc.

I would hate for anything here to be disagreeable to one as intellectually superior as yourself.

    * And I didn’t bother to correct your spelling….

    Morning Rounds

..this is a new dawn for the Iraqi people, who are electing a full four-year term Parliment. They’re making the most of it, as turnout is extremely heavy…
