Fiddling While Iran Arms

January 8th, 2006 at 1:34 pm by Cranky

The Left is nothing, if not consistient. As Iran increasingly shows its hand as an emerging nuclear power, all you can get out of our “peacemakers” is the same jaundiced self-loathing/reflection.

Let’s check in with our friends at Counterpunch.org.

The peace movements of the entire world should be in crisis mode right now, working non-stop to prevent the U.S. and Israel from starting a war against Iran. The reckless and unnecessary dangers arising from such a war are so obvious that one wonders why normal political forces in the two aggressor countries [note: Not referring to IRAN]– both of whom love to glorify themselves as democracies — would not prevent such a war from happening.

Meanwhile, from Tehran (via Regime Change Iran)

The head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, who is also the man behind Iran’s foreign policy, has warned Europeans “not to force the Islamic Republic to cut short the dialogue process and to opt for another scenario”. Speaking on Tuesday night on state television he said: “We are for a strategy based on dialogue, but if the counterparty Europe plays dirty, then we will pass onto another plan that we have worked out and then there will be problems for the Europeans.”

Without specifying the nature of the other plan and the other scenario, Larijani has compared the talks on Iran’s nuclear programme to a chess game.

“In this game, we are for a result that will be satisfactory to both Iran and Europe,” said Larijani adding that “if we lose, the same will also happen to the other party (Europe) and they will have to prepare themselves to live in a hell.”

Well, there are many ways to interpret that statement. Maybe a result that is “satisfactory to both Iran and Europe” involves no nuclear weapons.

OK, let’s all spot Iran the peaceful motivation. Careful not to choke on that brick of salt.

Besides, we know the true aggressors in this game.

The cowboy-like personalities and aggressive tendencies of both countries’ leaders tend to feed on each other. Domestic political difficulties and coming elections in both countries probably add to the macho inclination of the ruling elites to use force to remove any problems facing them.

Bingo. Large Penis Syndrome. What we need is a Feminization of the Middle East. While we’re having this enlightened conversation, let’s look at root causes too.

But right now, three of the long-existing “problems” in the Middle East (i.e., situations that have been made problems largely by our own actions) have reached critical stages that may, if Washington’s policies do not change quite quickly, result in our losing even the remnants of stability and peace that remain in that region today.

That dizzy feeling you having? That’s deja vu. You’ve heard this phrase before. It went hand in hand with the “Afghan Winter”, “The Inflamed Arab Street” the “Destabilization of the Entire Region”. One thing you learn when dealing with Libs is that nothing is learned. For pending conflicts just play soundbite #8334.

Given that all is our fault both historically and in our current foreign policy, should we be concerned by statements like this?

But Larijani used even stronger words for the United States. “A small error on the part of USA or the Zionists will be enough to induce us to unleash hell,” said Larijani. “They know this very well and for this they haven’t gone further than a verbal or psychological war,” he said.

Larijani also reiterated how Tehran “does not have any intension of renouncing its cycle of producing nuclear fuel.”

Mr. Professor, regardless of ideology and the currently f’d up Administration, isn’t this a bad thing?

Glad you asked Naive One.

The principal point to start with is that, unless the U.S. and Israel (and other nations as well) all agree to work seriously toward eliminating their own nuclear weapons, any Iranian government will consider that it has as much right as the rest of us to such weapons.

‘Scuse me sir, did I hear you right? The way to end this crisis with a hostile, Fundamentalist state is to dismantle our own nuclear weapons?

The single most urgent objective we should have right now is to prevent a war, possibly nuclear, from being started by the U.S. and/or Israel against Iran. To repeat, such a war would be disastrous, and we should be doing whatever we can, with the highest possible priority, to prevent it from ever happening.

Every peace activist on the globe ought to be in the streets and elsewhere lobbying in support of something very simple: do not attack Iran, even if this means allowing Iran to develop its own nuclear weapons.

Holy crap! You’re serious.

Will someone who believes in Evolution please explain how this “suicide” gene survives? I thought the last Roman who wanted to reach out and understand justifiable Visigoth rage was slaughtered.

    Holy fucking…

I am no longer amazed or in awe of the ignorant lemmings that follow their fellow pacifists off of that ledge. Too bad that they want to tie a rope to the rest of us in order to pull us down with them…

For the record, I’m in complete agreement with US nuclear disarmament.

I think we should get rid of our nuclear weapons. By depositing them in Tehran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and wherever the hell else mad mullahs are spouting off.

It’s time that Tehran glows in the dark. That will slow down their nuclear program substantially.

  4. Rae Says:

    Heh.

    Consistent waffling is always delightful.

    Erm, I think.

  5. Cranky Says:

    Rae,

What kills me is not so much the waffling, but the author’s completely distorted view of reality.

Note the conspicuous absence of ANY condemnation of Iran. Where is any statement that Iran shouldn’t have nuclear capability?

Why should we entrust our lives to such people? As long as people like this dipstick, Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore are celebrated by the Left, I’ll continue to vote Republican.

  6. Vinnie Says:

Haven’t you heard yet? Because the CIA overthrew the democratically elected (oh, and secular) PM of Iran in 1953, and installed the Shah, that’s what gave rise to the Ayatollah.

Yeah, once again, it’s our fault.

  7. former marxist Says:

We should have turned Iran into greeo glowing radioactive glass in 1980, but Jimmy the rabbit Carter didn’t have the brass cahones then.

Rosalyn had them locked up in a safe deposit box.

I hear the cahones are on display now at the presidental library.

  8. Gordon Says:

This is the moment I’ve been waiting for Former Marxist. With Iran on deck, Jimmah is facing a dilemma. Iran put the spank on him good, but if he’s true to his principles, then he must still denounce W’s position towards them.

Personally, I’m hoping that the contradiction causes his head to explode (in a non-fatal way, of course).

The thunderous echos of the 1930′s are deafening. Appeasment to “Herr Hitler” from Chamberlin gave the Euro-weenies “Peace for our time”. For all of about 30 minutes. The Japanese decided that the resources of Asia were theirs for the taking. Nanking burned and it was a pity to be sure. But so far away and they had been fidgeting about for so long any way…

The Germans in the 1930′s did not grow into a world threat because they were defending their borders. The Japanese of the same period had no interest in working in harmony with their neighbors to establish trading partnerships. Both these societies created military power with murderous intent in order to pursue border expansion of one sort or another; the capture of people, places, and things. They became the world-dominating forces of the late 1930′s precisely because their enemies allowed it.

Treaties? Diplomatic pleas? Economic sanctions? Tell that to a bullet from a Mauser or a bayonette on an Arisaka. Remind the men intombed in the USS Arizona that they should have been more sensitive. Explain the the 3,000 murdered innocents of September 11th that it was Washington’s policies that doomed them to an untimely death.

Or. The rest of the world could understand the danger in the Middle East and take appropriate action.

    Beware the Harshly Worded Statement

Iran keeps speeding like a locomotive towards the nuclear brass ring, and the world can’t quite figure out what to do. So, they’re doing the next best thing. Preparing a Security Council action. Not a security council resolution with the threat of fo…
