The Ugly Truth About Joel Stein

I wasn’t going to post on Joel Stein’s anti-troops column in the L.A. Times yesterday – you know, the one that has the ’sphere all a-twitter – that is, until I noticed that Joel Stein and Jimi Jamison of Survivor are actually the same person.

It’s no wonder his mullet-powered column was written with the Eye of the Tiger.

   Just look at JS’s website, the-Joel-Stein-dot-com. The guy has obviously been pampered and praised since Day One, told that everything he utters is gold. What professional writer puts clips from his high school days on the web?

   Jeremiah, take another good look – high school was around last week for this twink. I gotta give him the nod for at least calling the pre-existing hypocrisy among the ranks of his own flock for what it is, though.

   Stein is 34 a year-old Stanford-educated American … who specializes in writing about “pop culture” (a contradiction in terms). He had plenty of time to hone his craft.

   My problem is that when he left Survivor, they kept on touring and playing the hits that he made famous. Granted, the audiences dwindled and most fans left the shows nauseated beyond belief, but that was a case where the band was bigger than the sum of their parts. And Jamison’s solo albums weren’t anything to speak of. Though he never lost his mullet-powered sex appeal.
