It Has Begun, Part II

March 7th, 2006 at 9:07 pm by Cranky

You think Preston has it bad with his kids parroting TV commercials?

This week, I found that my eleven year old daughter’s favorite MP3 on the computer.

What kind of had me concerned was The Black Eyed Peas’ My Humps.

I’m not really one to lecture my kids on musical taste. When my daughter told me she liked Rhapsody in Blue*, I (honestly) told her that Queen was a great band.

However, I was taken aback by realization that she is listening to what her peers at middle school are.

Being a responsible parent, I listened to the track. Even though the lyrics were simultaneously inane and sexual, I was haunted by this mental image:

I guess we’re at that age where my little baby is growing into a socially conscious pre-teen.

Please pray.

That is bad. My 7 year old niece lives in Frankfort, IL (1 hour south of Chicago) and it is lilly white. She is allowed to watch MTV and other nonsense.
I’ve heard her say, “Aw Snap!” (ghetto) from time to time and she’ll sing Nelly’s “It’s getting hot in here” on cue. I keep telling her parents to turn off the TV in their house. So far it doesn’t register.

still nothing as frightening as this thing

  3. Cranky Says:

Fortunately Michel, I don’t think the kids ‘get’ the lyrics yet.

Mac, Watching camel booty just horrifies me. Where did you find that gem?

  4. MacStansbury Says:

    it finds me, Cranky…

    it finds me…

  5. SINcerely Says:

When my kids didn’t get the lyrics, I made sure they knew what they were listening too. In an age appropriate way of course. I remember mom freaking out when she saw a picture of Alice Cooper. And my younger sister not being able to sleep because of my poster of Ziggy Stardust lol.

It reminds me of an old friend, back in my youth that used to sing “Double Dutch Bus” ad-continuum until I had to inform him that it’s about picking up whores in a seedy neighborhood and has nothing to do with a bus full of urban kids jumping rope!

Shitty music will always find a way to permeate the mainstream.

YS, that’s hilarious. I didn’t know what that song was about either.

At least I didn’t go around singing it tho.

My daughter was in the exact same boat about a month ago. She is 10 (5th grade). I unlike you do feel I can sway my daughters musical taste as I am a musician, a rock musician even and have had many years of what is good, bad or just fluff. I told her that it was possibly the stupidest song I had ever heard (which it is) and every time it came on the radio or TV I made fun of it and tried to make her laugh. She does not consider that music any longer thankfully but I am sure there are many more to come as she reaches puberty.

Best to always be one step a head of them. Several months ago I needed to get online. At the time AOL had me blocked….ummmmmm I get banned there often. I used my 18 yr. old sons account. Being one of those too intrusive mothers I checked out his favorite places. What I found was two sites, one on giving one on receiving oral sex. I didn’t freak out. I simply left the name of the sites but linked them to stories from the Vatican. My moto……..don’t join them……beat the hell out of them. They will get the idea.

  10. Cranky Says:

I like your style SIN. But can you please elaborate on this earlier comment?

“I made sure they knew what they were listening too. ”

What is your thinking behind explaining the lyrics?

  11. SINcerely Says:

Cranky, once they understand what the song is about most young kids with self respect or respect for others won’t listen any longer.

  12. Digger Says:

SIN, we’re talking about CRANKY’s kid here!
