Serious Warning On Fiscal Responsibility

April 13th, 2006 at 5:19 pm by Cranky

I hope our Republican President, Senate and Congress are hearing this loud and clear.

A category five political storm is building in GOP precincts around the country, and it is going to blow Republicans right out of the majority in November if they don’t soon give their supporters some reason to re-elect them.

If there is one thing I hate more than a free-spending liberal, it’s a free spending hypocrite who has demonstrated that everything promised is secondary to getting his hand into the cookie jar.

Read the article. The most angering parts are when simple reforms are smacked down.

For example:

Kevin Brady of Texas wanted a floor vote to establish a commission to sunset federal agencies that have outlived their usefulness. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin asked for a floor vote on the line-item veto–just a vote. Mr. Lewis and his band of spenders would still have the chance to try and defeat it on the House floor.

The Wardrobe Door discusses another reform which is sure to be DOA.

[Senator Jim] DeMint’s bill would basically cut the federal gas tax from 18.3 cents to 3.7 cents, which would pay for up keep of federal highways and roads on federal land. Currently all the other money (14.6 cents on every dollar spent on gas) is being sent back to states for projects, some of which are gigantic pieces of pork – Bridge to Nowhere anyone. States could then keep the rate the same or adjust it depending on their particular needs.

From Sen. DeMint directly:

The national interstate highway system was completed years ago, and it’s time for us to empower states to make their own transportation decisions. The highway funding process has lost its focus, with the majority of dollars going to earmarks for state and local projects that serve no national purpose. States send their road funds to Washington, and then have to fight tooth and nail to get a portion of those dollars back. Clearly, states better understand their residents’ needs than bureaucrats and politicians in Washington and states should make these decisions.

The powerlessness of the voter to get spending under control is infuriating. I’m still mulling over keeping my votes limited to state and local races. I’ll finish with the punchline from the Opinion Journal piece:

And now they won’t even allow a vote on budget reforms that their own President and a majority of their own Members support.
At the current pace, a Democratic majority in Congress would be preferable, if only for reasons of truth in advertising.

Never before in my lifetime have I felt that the government of the United States was illegitimate. Now I do. Various administrations have been awful, stupid, ineffective or arrogant, which is to say Johnson or Carter (and I even remember Harry Truman), but they pale in comparison to this gang of bums…from the Executive Office through both Houses of Congress. Absolutely dreadful.

  2. Cranky Says:

You know, I just feel ripped off. As a cynical kid, I didn’t vote because “they’re all thieves” was my mantra.

Then I caught caught up in the ideological hoopla, believing that “our ideas are better than theirs.”

I still do, but when I see stuff like this, I can’t help but feel like I was played for a sucker.

We were all played, Crankster. And we’re still gettin’ played. I’m considering abandoning state and local elections this year as well. Even though I know you can have more of an impact at the local level, the trickle-down despair caused by self-interested politicians at all levels has taken its toll on me.

  4. dsmith Says:

I got what I wanted from Bush — i.e., War on Terror (instead of just burying our heads); Two possibly Three Supreme Court Justices and some tax cuts.

But Jeezus! Their outspending liberals fercryingoutloud!
