The 5th Column Paleo-Con

June 11th, 2006 at 1:29 pm by Smantix

The unusually frisky Frummy wrote on the advent of the Paleocon movement and its coming demise in NRO a while back:

There is, however, a fringe attached to the conservative world that cannot overcome its despair and alienation. The resentments are too intense, the bitterness too unappeasable. Only the boldest of them as yet explicitly acknowledge their wish to see the United States defeated in the War on Terror. But they are thinking about defeat, and wishing for it, and they will take pleasure in it if it should happen.

They began by hating the neoconservatives. They came to hate their party and this president. They have finished by hating their country.

War is a great clarifier. It forces people to take sides. The paleoconservatives have chosen — and the rest of us must choose too. In a time of danger, they have turned their backs on their country. Now we turn our backs on them.

Frummy was being overly-kind in taking this whack at the Paleo-pinata but prescient nevertheless. Not that anyone has to toe the party line or be Junior’s biggest fan to qualify for the NRO Cruise but there is a lingering malignancy to conservatism that is asking to be irradiated. For example, let’s look at a recent column by VDare columnist Paul Craig Roberts:

June 08, 2006
War Criminal Nation

By Paul Craig Roberts

Faced with mounting civilian carnage, both from war crimes committed by demoralized and broken US troops and from the raging civil war unleashed by Bush’s ill-fated illegal invasion of Iraq, the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee has decided to waste another $50 billion to continue the lost war for five more months. Our elected “representatives” are so in thrall to the powerful military- industrial complex that no amount of American shame, pariah status and military defeat can shut off the flow of taxpayers’ funds to the merchants of death.

Bush’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are costing hard-pressed US taxpayers $300,000,000 per day! These wars are lost.
[...]
Gentle reader, are you getting enough vicarious pleasure from the slaughter of Iraqi women and children to justify this price tag? Is murdering “ragheads” that important to you? If so, you are one sick person, just like every member of the Bush administration.

US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have killed far more civilians than they have resistance fighters. Bush administration spokespersons are crowing that they have killed Musab al-Zarqawi in an air strike. But al-Zarqawi was an al Qaeda leader, not a member of the Iraqi resistance. Al-Zarqawi’s death will have no affect on the outcome in Iraq.
[...]
America is drowning in the shame of war crimes. One monstrous slaughter of civilians after another, each denied and covered up until brought to light by photos and eye witnesses. The once proud US Marines, unable to defeat the resistance that is picking them off one by one, is now a frustrated, demoralized force that is getting even by murdering 3-month old babies and old women.
[...]
Formerly conservative, now proto-Nazi, publications such as National Review and the Wall Street Journal editorial page, keep pounding the war drums, as does right-wing talk radio and neocon propaganda organs such as the Weekly Standard and Fox “News.” The few facts that emerge in the interstices of the war propaganda are quickly spun away.
Bush supporters dismiss anyone who tells them the truth as a traitor. Bush supporters are as dependent on propaganda as substance abusers are on drugs and alcohol. Try weaning Bush supporters from the obvious lies that are the basis of this administration, and they will call you every name in the book.

They are proud to be Americans. Lies and war crimes are an American right.

And you had better shut up or those Halliburton-built concentration camps will be your new home.

Hrm. The proto-Nazi Wall Street Journal, the demoralized baby-killing armed forces who murder babies not just to “get even” but “ragheads” too out of racism in an illegal and already lost war. And if you even for a moment believe that overthrowing Saddam Hussein and the Taliban was a good idea – well, you’re a sick and diseased drug user. And probably an alcoholic to boot! al-Zarqawi’s death will have no impact – much like the dozens of other raids as a result of information gathered from his Hibhib hideaway. And you, gentle reader are vicariously taking pleasure in this Roman display like the tools of Jewry you are.

Has the only thing that’s kept Roberts from getting a guest column at Truthout or Counterpunch the fact that they don’t still have segregated water fountains and bathrooms?

Any casual observer of Roberts’ “movement” over the last few years kicked these thinly veiled syndicated klansmen or juvenile John Birchers to the curb before Pitchfork Pat bolted for Reform. Paleo-pr0n rantings who rolled into the ditch mere moments after the rhetorical rubber met the electoral road.

Now we turn our backs on them.

Sorry Davey but even then you were a little behind on this one. Many of us turned our backs on them a long time ago. Somehow they’ve still eluded our Halliburton concentration camps until now.

Artist’s rendering of the Buchanan Family Reunion before they committed mass suicide for being too dark-skinned.

UPDATE: My bad. He does contribute to Counterpunch when sufficiently unhinged.

September 11, 2001, played into neoconservative hands exactly as the 1933 Reichstag fire played into Hitler’s hands. Fear, hysteria, and national emergency are proven tools of political power grabs. Now that the federal courts are beginning to show some resistance to Bush’s claims of power, will another terrorist attack allow the Bush administration to complete its coup?

Yea. Does everybody remember when that happened? Such wild-eyed Godwin invocation should keep him a humble servant at Alexander Cockbite’s side.

UPDATE 2: Jumpin’ White Knight Chomskyites – he’s at Z-mag too!

Surely you\’ve heard that it\’s not a political spectrum at all. It\’s more of a circle where the extreme left and right are holding hands at the circle\’s furthest point.

A clear-headed isolationist makes sense. This stuff is horrifying.
