Where Were You
September 12th, 2006 at 10:10 pm by Cranky… when this came out?
Another love/hate MTV moment; when I first saw this video, it was love at first sight. So I then parked myself in front of the TV for a week waiting for it to come back on. However some Madonna shiite or something was in heavy rotation and I never saw it again.
But I bought the record and became a Talking Heads fan from that moment on.
The person that did this video also did Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer”. You can see the similarities towards the end.
This moment of nostaliga was brought to you by the letter “H” and the number 7.
UPDATE:
Have I mentioned lately that YouTube is the coolest thing to happen since the invention of the search engine? Every freakin’ obscure memory I have has some sort of URL attached.

September 12th, 2006 at 10:46 pm
“Every freakin’ obscure memory I have has some sort of URL attached.”
Someone taped the last time you had sex and posted it on Youtube?
running away
September 12th, 2006 at 10:50 pm
Beyatch. No one taped it. I’m SURE I was alone at the time.
September 12th, 2006 at 11:54 pm
Don’t be so sure, you haven’t checked the toads for mini-cams, have you?
Didn’t think so.
September 13th, 2006 at 1:25 am
If we can bring the commentary back out of the gutter…
You Tube is GREAT. I have been able to recreate my teen MTV viewing years…up until 4am watching Pat Benetar, Squeeze, Flock of Seagulls, etc.
And the Twilight Zone video by Golden Earring…I could watch that about a thousand times.
One thing I can’t recreate. My sweetheart, Martha Quinn, spinning my tunes…
September 13th, 2006 at 1:40 am
Another great Talking Heads moment: psychokiller.
September 13th, 2006 at 8:00 am
Stop Making Sense was the best concert movie ever.
Billy, I have to agree with you on all counts. And yes Martha was the Mary Ann to the Nina Blackwood’s Ginger. Definitely the best one.
September 13th, 2006 at 9:05 am
I want to find Nick Kershaw and his ” Wouldn’t It Be Good” video. Love that song. Think I’ll go tubing too.
September 13th, 2006 at 10:03 am
What about the time you were rollin’ over? Fall on your face. You must be having fun.
September 13th, 2006 at 10:13 am
What about the time you were rollin’ over? Fall on your face. You must be having fun.
Maybe this is a good time to put it back in the gutter…
September 14th, 2006 at 6:23 am
Cranky–You’re frightening me. We have way too much in common.
I wrote a post last week about my love affair with YouTube. (BTW…you can see two of my films on there…you won’t like the documentary, but you will love the short on speed dating) Sorry…shameless plug…I digress.
I was in the mood for Steeleye Span, and sure enough I found them on YouTube, as I have Big Country and Toni Basil and other one hit wonders.
It’s really fun to watch those videos from MTV…back when the “M” stood for music. If you’re a 60s fan, (a lot of conservatives were once hippies) check out Hullabaloo and Shindig and American Bandstand. I’ve seen The Zombies, Barry McGuire, The Kinks and others on there. And the dancers are really funny.
September 14th, 2006 at 10:11 am
I’ll check out your YouTube stuff tonight. Where can I see the Kinks stuff?
BTW, don’t be shy about plugging your stuff. Drop links too.
September 14th, 2006 at 4:46 pm
Hi Cranky,
In the search at YouTube, just type in “The Kinks” and a ton of videos come up for them.
I’m a Beatles freak, and my favorite find has been Paul McCartney teaching George Martin “For No One” from Revolver.
You’ll like my dating short becasue it’s sick and twisted and funny, but the healthcare documentary might rise to callling me a commie. Though you might like the part where I ambush the Governor, and I *do* show confidential memos from his office that show he was lying about needing to dismantle TennCare. So even if you’re against healthcare for all, (I heard that “commie” under your breath!) I have found a lot of conservatives like it because it shows just how much this Governor has lied.
September 14th, 2006 at 8:01 pm
~~~But if you are carrying pictures of Chairman Mao~~~~
~~~Nashville Is Talking will hire you here and now~~~~
September 14th, 2006 at 8:58 pm
Tenncare was an abortion from the start. It should have been dismantled before it began. Holy shit, don’t get me started on that, I’m pissed off enough today.
September 14th, 2006 at 10:05 pm
LOL Smantix–unless, of course, you’re Jewish. I assume you’ve seen ACKs posts where he suggests the Jews might have known about 9/11? WKRN hired him two weeks after that. That one made my day.
Preston, a thousand pardons. Just pretend I didn’t say the “T” word and watch the short film on speed dating if you’re in the mood.
September 14th, 2006 at 10:51 pm
Yea, I think I saw that one. Or the one where Bush is a fag laying the bone to the ex-Mayor of Knoxville.
Another fine piece of bloggery from the people who bring us the radical global warming Weatherman who can’t predict the freaking 5-day forecast.
The only thing I’m remotely certain of is that Channel 2 is out to ruin the credibility of all bloggers by giving them a paycheck and no editorial oversight.
Interesting Trivia note:
Number of posts dedicated to the Valerie Plame non-scandal mentioned in the last year at the NiTwittery = 47
Number of times Valerie Plame has been mentioned since Colin Powell’s corkboy Richard Armitage admitted he did it = 0.
Now Sharon, you used to work for the fine folks who bring us The Olberdouche Report. Is there cumulative review for consistently being wrong at every single turn where an editor/station manager actually has to step to stop you from maliciously spreading falsehoods?
I’m just saying cause this dick is oblivious to any sort of objectivity under his station’s banner. That must be “the vision thing” or some other Tofflerian futurespeak BS.
And I am completely serious about wanting the FEC to haul them in front of a court to test McCain-Feingold. To be sure – I am completely against McFein but an ABC affiliate running two full-time blogs as advertisements for Harold Ford, Jr. and Phil Bredesen as to circumvent campaign finance laws needs a little scrutiny from the federal level.
It would be the first time anyone actually linked to them for their content instead of Big Bad Jeff Jarvis overhyping The Grand Experiment.
September 15th, 2006 at 1:13 am
Smantix,
The last time I tried to do anything about state sponsored propaganda paid for by tax payer money, I was run out of the blogosphere under the guise of trying to out an anonymous blogger. As you know, that is not something I ever tried to do, but AC and Brittney spun it that way, and I was mercilessly crucified on a daily basis just weeks after having an abdominal hysterectomy. It was one of the cruelest things I have had done to me in my adult life.
Political operatives have found a great way to get their message out via WKRN because they have zero experience in being spun by operatives. If you think Mike Kopp (on the left) and Ward Baker (on the right)under differnt monikers don’t regularly work them…well, you do know.
Regarding Sechrist, I talked to him several times last month. I wanted him to prove me wrong. He believes the blogs are not to be held to the same standard as journalists. I pointed out how they are not journalists when it’s convenient, and they are journalists when you mention the lack of journalistic integrity and they get offended.
I don’t want to say anything bad about any individual, but I will say that I am almost 50, have 30 years experience in one form of the media or the other, have worked in political campaigns since I was age 15, and I have never seen anything like what is happening at WKRN.
From their perspective, it is a revolution and the future of journalism. Forget those of us who try to follow in the footsteps of Murrow and bring on the entertainment news. We’re old, they’re not and they are the future of news and we’re the past and never the two shall meet.
Unfortunately, they won’t learn until they are brought up on libel charges or before the FCC as you mentioned. I tried talking with several people there until I was blue in the face. I don’t blame Brittney or AC,(though neither of them would talk with me to clarify anything) but Mike Sechrist knows what’s going on, and he made it clear to me he approves of how they run the blogs.
September 15th, 2006 at 2:36 am
PS
I meant to type FEC where I typed FCC.
September 15th, 2006 at 7:14 am
How did a Talking Heads post generate such an interesting discussion? The beauty of the comments section, I suppose.
September 15th, 2006 at 8:48 am
Same as it ever was.
September 15th, 2006 at 8:48 am
It all starts with a Beatles reference and before you know it – we’re bashing the neighborhood Yoko.
I am a fan of anonymity. Without it, I’d have people going after me at my employer(s) all the time. And I only approve of going after IP addresses unless physical threats or some relevant misrepresentation/sock puppetry is in play.
Having said that, a certain someone had a post in their personal site a few weeks ago about using Channel 2’s site out the IP addresses of everyone who disagrees with them. Naturally, the coffee klatch of people who depend on those 30 hits to the referral logs of their woefully undertalented blogs were all for it.
Your situation hinged on making sure you had the right person you were trying to out – didn’t it? And that you were trying to establish the person as someone inside of Bredesen’s administration?
Under the current regimes, I do not even comment on sites where I feel there is a question as to whether I can trust the owner.
Onward with the “progressive” witch hunt!
September 15th, 2006 at 9:22 am
Tune in tomorrow when Cranky does a fart joke and we all end up discussing Federalism!
Carry on. Substance is refreshing.
September 15th, 2006 at 11:17 am
Smantix,
If you want to see the ultimate hypocracy, AC posted the IP address of someone working with Jake Ford who wanted to remain anonymous! He’s just playing politics and NO one said one word to him yesterday about doing that, while I was trying to track one specific operative and was very clear I wouldn’t say anything if I didn’t know exactly who was working for Phil and doing his PR in the blog world on tax payer monies.
But look at VV from yesterday and see he is outing an anonymous blogger and read his comments about it. Talk about Talking Heads!
(See how I brought that full circle for Cranky?)
So back to the Talking Heads, tons of their stuff on YouTube too. I keep waiting for YouTube to get “Napstered,” but so far they seem to be able to post all of these great performances and televsion shows without anyone talking about copyright infringement.
I’m not sure how they’re pulling that off, but I sure love them! (How are they getting around the copyright issue, anyway?)
September 15th, 2006 at 11:46 am

Ahh, something I can relate to.
I think it is an uneasy truce between YouTube and the content providers.
Studios and record labels are often getting publicity which would cost them millions. Often movie trailers end up on YT.
Also, and this is the key part IMO, you cannot file swap YT stuff. As far as I know, there is no way for me to download that video or burn it to a DVD.
Pure genius if you ask me.
So, OT on topic, seems like this Nashville station needs some national bad attention. Why not tip off Drudge or sumthin?
September 15th, 2006 at 2:04 pm
These YouTube issues are very similar to the same thing that happened when radio was invented.
Who is going to go see the concert if they can listen to the song for free on the radio?
We all know how that turned out. The record companies started paying off radio stations so their songs would get heard. Funny how that free pub works.
SC – your man Gill needs to get on the stick. He talked smack about Saint Harold Gotti, Jr. (peace be upon him) and now the NiTwit Mafia is threatening to give Gill the gangrene from gnawing on his ankle. And the rest of the “Big Conservative Nashville Media” too. Har!
September 15th, 2006 at 4:39 pm
I’m confused on the last thing. Gill is working for WKRN now as their special political correspondent.
Is his job secure?
September 15th, 2006 at 6:27 pm
No reason for me to think otherwise but I’m dumbstruck by the people calling on Channel 2 to fire him for his “analysis” that he gets to give less than 10 minutes a week while blabbering on a Channel 2 sponsored blog that has a bunch of literal Chomskyite worshipping leftards that does nothing but run hit pieces against Republicans several times a day – every day.
For consistency’s sake, if they want “fairness” – to fire Gill then they should fire the rest of them too. But it’s not about fairness, it’s the same old unreformed Stalinist Left out to silence anyone who thinks differently than them.
The reason Tennessee has a big conservative punditry is because there are no large media outlets outside of Clear Channel that cater to them. And why the fat-n-happy Left side of the sphere are bunch of slow moving targets.
Channel 5 refers to pro-Legal immigration people as “anti-immigrant”, who was the last Republican that The Tennessean endorsed? To these people, the Scene is a moderate weekly and Liz Garrigan is it’s right wing generalissimo even though she just endorsed nominating a Bredesen-fast tracked judicial abortion like Aleta Trauger to the State Supreme Court.
Absurd. Bredesen’s own Harriet Miers moment.
September 15th, 2006 at 6:30 pm
Are we still allowed to talk about the ORIGINAL subject matter? No, not toads and Cranky’s sex life…
TALKING HEADS videos?
At least I think that was what we were originally discussing…
If that’s the case, check out this one…it’s wild:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ohLNB5DPJhU
September 15th, 2006 at 7:01 pm
Smantix,
As odd as it may sound, I believe Steve is more than qualified for his position. He and I disagree politically, but we personally get along great. He is actually qualified for his position at WKRN. He is an attorney and talk show host who has long been in the trenches in the political arena and has sources…good, reliable sources, and completely understands Tennessee politics. I even posted on Hobb’s blog (when Steve was hired) that it was a good move. Steve’s qualified. He’s one of the few new hires there who is qualified for polictical analysis. He’s quite capable of removing his talk show persona and doing good political analysis.
You’re right. If the left is complaining about him, then they need to look at the whole picture. Steve (on KRN) is infinitely more qualified to cover politics AND is much more balanced in his coverage than the KRN bloggers, but again, Sechrist made it clear to me he didn’t want his bloggers to be balanced.
Brittney and AC are only doing their jobs. This is what Sechrist wants.
September 15th, 2006 at 7:05 pm
Billy, I’ll see your “Wild, Wild Life” and raise you one “Once in a Lifetime”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0b3NzIUdOGQ
Man, this reminiscing is refreshing.
Sharon & Smantix, carry on.
September 15th, 2006 at 7:38 pm
I also watched “And She Was”:
Link
and “Stay Up Late”:
Link
Next week, let’s do old Tom Petty videos…
September 15th, 2006 at 8:02 pm
Cranky already ruined “And She Was” for me. After an episode of My Name Is Ahmadinejad had me take another look at the lyrics, I can’t see it as being about anything but a suicide bomber.
September 15th, 2006 at 9:06 pm
Gordon,
Thanks for adding that link. I hadn’t seen that video in ages.
Billy–Tom Petty works for me, but I already cast my vote (for best Petty video) for Free falling.
Doug-the lyrics to “And She Was” looked like a rather pleasant acid trip. Funny, I look the lyrics and see acid trip, and Cranky sees a suicide bomber? lol Well, I suppose either way the girl was taking one heck of a trip.
September 15th, 2006 at 9:33 pm
“Cranky sees a suicide bomber” Waitaminute. I never said that. The episode of “My Name Is Ahaminejad” featured lyrics from “Once in a Lifetime.”
Let’s go to the archive shall we?
http://sixmeatbuffet.com/archives/2006/02/13/episode-iii-this-aint-no-party/
Billy and Sharon, I’m sorry to tell you that Tom Petty is where we need to part company. The only record of his that I appreciated was “Full Moon Fever” which seems to be the least liked among the faithful. I think it was the Travelling Wilburys / Jeff Lynne influence that helped.
September 16th, 2006 at 1:03 am
What is the record for longest comment string on SMB? Props to YouTube and the Talking Heads, cause this one still has life…
BTW, I meant to say this earlier, but I always thought Tina Weymouth was a total babe….
As far as Petty goes…I have all of his stuff…everything. Been to about 30 of his shows. So musically I think he is superb, but Cranky I guess we can disagree there and I will still respect you.
But the videos…”Don’t Come Around Here No More” and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”? And that’s just scratching the surface. Petty’s videos were most excellent, Dude…
September 16th, 2006 at 8:13 am
Cranky only posted the episode. Planted the seed, as it were. It was me that saw the song in a whole new light. I mean really now, what’s this all about?
She was glad about it… no doubt about it
She isnt sure where shes gone
No time to think about what to tell them
No time to think about what shes done
And she was
And she was looking at herself
And things were looking like a movie
She had a pleasant elevation
Shes moving out in all directions
The world was moving and she was right there with it (and she was)
The world was moving she was floating above it (and she was) and she was
Joining the world of missing persons (and she was)
Missing enough to feel alright (and she was)
See? She no longer is – she was.
September 16th, 2006 at 10:04 am
Doug…I am almost completely with you…except there is one line in “And She Was” that completely eliminates it from being about a suicide bomber…
“And she was taking off her dress…”
Of course I have heard that rumor that David Byrne’s original lyrics contained the phrase “and she was putting on her burka”…but I don’t think that fits…and I don’t think I saw a burka in the video.
We see the chick’s toes throughout the video…isn’t that a little too much skin for a Muslim woman to show? Unless of course those were her feet that were blown off of her after detonation…
September 16th, 2006 at 10:39 am
Shes moving out in all directions
Eewww!
September 16th, 2006 at 4:49 pm
I”m telling ya…it has acid trip written all over it.
September 16th, 2006 at 5:06 pm
Sharon,
If you are so fixated on acid trips, let’s convince Cranky to loan up Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More” video next week.
It’s Alice in Wonderland…the ULTIMATE Acid Trip…
Of course I have no experience with Acid Trips. What can you tell me about them, Sharon?
September 16th, 2006 at 7:28 pm
What is the record for longest comment string on SMB?
If I’m not mistaken, the longest comment thread was one on conservative rock lyrics. Some nasty lefties found the post it started long comment thread. 63 comments. http://sixmeatbuffet.com/archives/2005/12/04/rock-songs-conservatives-can-love
Re: Petty, let’s agree to disagree on that one. I still think you’re pretty cool. Hope you can spot me the same even though I think “Don’t come around here no more” was the video that probably killed the radio star for me.
“Running Down a Dream”. Now that was great.
Acid? Well let’s just say one trip was enough to know how dangerous it was.
September 16th, 2006 at 10:02 pm
Billy,
Now I want to see that video…another great one. Regarding acid…I never took any hard drugs,(pot is the only illegal drug I’ve tried) but my ex husband did a ton of illegal drugs, and the lyrics look like the way he spoke when he was trippin.
Gordon said, “Some nasty lefties found the post it started long comment thread.”
Gordon-Are you trying to tell me something?
September 16th, 2006 at 11:28 pm
Gordon said, “Some nasty lefties found the post it started long comment thread.”
Don’t be thin skinned, that’s my schitck!
No, by nasty lefties I mean people who, in addition to holding left-leaning views, are miserable human beings.
Not to sound like a panderer, but I have plenty of friends who think I’m a right wing wacko (I am) and that they are hopelessly deluded by liberalism (they are).
We just don’t discuss politics.
Let me tell you that I appreciate you being here.
September 17th, 2006 at 12:11 am
Here you go, Sharon…
Cranky, it’s OK if I share this, right?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BorG9TpPFHc
And I really didn’t want to know about the acid tripping…
We are all friends here on the YouTube “I remember the 80’s” string…
September 17th, 2006 at 12:47 am
Cranky–Although I admit I am thin skinned, I was more concerned I was intruding. I’ve always said that when I visit a blog, I treat it the same way as I would visiting someone’s home. Im a lefty with very good manners.
Billy–Thank you for the link. I don’t know if you’re in Nashville, but I think Petty is coming here again.
And while we’re talking about 80s, what happened to Big Country? I loved their sound and as far as I know, they just had that one hit in the 80s with “Big Country.”
September 17th, 2006 at 1:06 am
Billy,
these comments from the YouTube site could have been me….
UptownKiko
Seriously, this vid used to freak me out at the tender age of 8! Loved it from day one though, ahhh the days when MTV actually played MUSIC!
alvaromexico
lol, this video also used to freak me out when I was a kid and Im sure there are a lot of people out there who felt the same way!
scuzmunkie
dude! i know exactly what you mean! i hated the cake part as a kid!
alvaromexico
yes, thats right! the cake part, the cup tea part, the giant tom petty costume part! the entire video! SPOOKY!!
Sharon,
Big Country had an almost-hit after that. Fields of Fire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncFdQtqTliU
Speaking of groups that disappeared too soon. Didja like the Alarm? You know, the next U2.
September 17th, 2006 at 1:17 am
That Alarm comment is so funny. I remember when “Rain in the Summertime” came out, I used to hate them because I thought they were trying to sound like U2…
But then something cool happened. While I was at UCLA, they played an impromptu concert in the quad. No announcement…some roadies just started setting up amps, a small stage etc…then they got out of a van and started playing.
Been a fan ever since…especially love their version of “Sold Me Down the River”…
(BTW, the next year, the Red Hot Chili Peppers did the exact same thing. I guess it was just a way for record companies to get a jump start with the college crowd)
No Sharon, I am a SoCal…actually a LoCal (San Diegan). Petty will be here in two weeks…
I still have that original Big Country album in vinyl. I used to have a college roommate that looked JUST like that lead singer guy…the one who just offed himself.
September 17th, 2006 at 1:25 am
A little elaboration on Big Country. Lead singer Stuart Adamson had relocated to Nashville during the band’s “hiatus”…
I didn’t have that knowledge memorized…in fact I had forgotten his name…
RIP Stuart…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_Adamson
September 17th, 2006 at 3:22 am
Billy,
Thanks for the info on BG. I had no idea the lead singer killed himself or that he spent some time in Nashville. It was interesting to read the Wikipedia info and see how they got that “bagpipe” sound. I had always thought it was something similiar to a St.Clavier. (sp?)
Unfortunately I can’t view the video at the moment. I did something to where I can’t watch videos.(I cleared my temp files and cookies out–that’s all I can think of that caused the problem) YouTube site said I needed to d/l Macromedia, so I did, but it still isn’t working. Frustrating, to say the least!
I admit that I am powerless over YouTube, and that only a techie can save me.
September 17th, 2006 at 7:02 am
Okay. It only took me 7 hours to figure out I should restore to the date before I cleared out my files. Doh!
So I just watched Fields of Fire, and it sounded a lot like their first single. It was interesting to see a bagpipe player in the video knowing the sound is created by harmonics of the guitars.
But, speaking of bagpipes, do you know what the biggest selling record with real bagpipes in it was/is? Hint: Not a hit in this country.
September 17th, 2006 at 11:22 am
Bag-pipe trivia? And it wasn’t a hit here? Sorry, Sharon, I haven’t a clue. Unless it was on MTV or 91X (our local progressive rock…which doesn’t mean left-tard…station), then I wouldn’t have a clue.
But I’ll play 80’s music trivia all day long. I have a LARGE 80’s music collection, and I am willing to go Tubing anytime…
September 17th, 2006 at 11:33 am
I’m guessing it’s AC/DC, It’s a long way to the top.
September 17th, 2006 at 4:49 pm
It was the biggest selling single in England until Elton John’s revised version of Candle In The Wind, though Wikipedia says “Do They Know It’s Christmas” is what knocked it out of best selling single, but it remained best selling single that wasn’t for charity. It was on MTV, but not very much because it barely cracked the charts over here. You definitely know the artist. It was released in 1977. Anything come to mind?
September 17th, 2006 at 8:17 pm
I got nothing. Unless I want to cheat and look it up on the net…
But my music ethics procludes me from doing so…
Gotta a Tubular video to go with it?
September 17th, 2006 at 8:26 pm
Okee dokee
Link
The video is from MTV.
September 17th, 2006 at 8:53 pm
Dang Sharon, I never would have gotten that.
September 17th, 2006 at 8:57 pm
THAT was the biggest-selling bagpipe hit?
Yuck.
I like McCartney, but that really wasn’t very good…
I epecially like him in this…
http://youtube.com/watch?v=-0df2PyQPn0
September 17th, 2006 at 9:01 pm
Gordon,
That’s one of my favorite songs by him/them. I can easily visualize a lot of people sitting around in pubs singing that song, which is what happened.
That was his favorite place on earth, and where he and his lovely family enjoyed a private, nice life before the gold digger.
September 17th, 2006 at 9:13 pm
Billy,
It was his biggest selling hit in the UK…not just the biggest hit with bagpipes.
It’s sad to see how happy he was with Linda, and how uptight he always looked next to the model.
Regarding his cameo is Tracey’s video, it speaks loudly as to how much Tracey is respected in the UK. She’s one of the funniest comdians alive, yet she’s never quite hit real star status in the U.S. ButI love that video. I pretty much like anything with Miss Ullman in it.
September 18th, 2006 at 7:33 am
What was the longest comment thread over here?
September 18th, 2006 at 7:44 am
Sixty three. I think this will be the longest thread.
Re: Linda McC. From all appearances, they really loved each other.
Silly aside; do you remember when some pissed off roadie leaked Linda’s vocal track from a live performance of “Hey Jude”? Hilarious.
September 18th, 2006 at 7:56 am
That leaked tape of Linda was awful! She acually can sing better than that tape.
She took it in stride, unlike the b****who married him for his money. Linda was the real deal, a charming, gentle lady who loved her husband and children and animals above all else, and had the grace to hold her head high when everyone made fun of her. I’m sure Paul misses her more than ever with the divorce. Heather is soooooooo much different than Linda…I never got why he married her. I mean, he still could have gotten a model type(if that’s what he wanted) but who was more his type.
When I was 7, I sent a postcard to Liverpool, England addressed to him asking him to marry me when I grew up. Well, I’m all grown up. Maybe I should try again.
September 18th, 2006 at 12:30 pm
Sharon,
I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings about “Mull”. My guess is that it got popular in the UK because there were publicans doing just what you envisioned…sitting around in a pub and singing it.
But here in the US that wouldn’t happen. If you can’t dance to it…
Funny how our own visions of songs can enhance our enjoyment of them. For example, on BOC’s Don’t Fear the Reaper, I simply CANNOT listen to that song anymore without hearing that cow bell.
I am not even sure there IS a cow bell in that song, but I hear it anyway. And I picture Will Ferrell pounding away on it.
I’d link it, but SNL and NBC pulled all the classic SNL clips. Bastards…

Do you want the good news
Or the bad news?
BTW, you cats need a preview button.

NO PREVIEW BUTTON FOR YOU.

Billy,
When I hear “Don’t Fear The Reaper,” I think of a scene in 6Ft Under where they’re all singing it at a funeral. (if you never saw the show, there was a lot of dark humor)
Doug, I was wondering how long it would be before YouTube got “Napstered.” I guess the big difference is it isn’t a file swap.
Here’s my prediction for YouTube:
They’ll continue to offer free uploads and viewing for people who make their own movies, but anything from networks and concerts will be a new premium service we’ll have to subscribe to. (worst proposistion I ever ended in a preposistion)
I don’t have any inside info on that. It’s pure speculation on my part.
September 18th, 2006 at 9:48 pm
I don’t get why they would make you pay for the music videos though. It’s free publicity. Heck, half of the music I own is because of a video I saw on MTV.
Here is a great example. One of my favorite videos from the MTV Golden Era. I NEVER heard this song on the radio, but it played constantly on MTV…and I bought it. I still love the song…

I could give you example after example after example…
Plus digging these now-obscure videos out of the basement is fun…

OK, this is officially the longest thread in Six Meat Buffet. Preston, am I right?
Billy, this is the absolute freakiest; I actually searched for Martin Brily last week. For some odd reason, songs I haven’t heard for 25 years just come back to me. I was looking for this one and Don’t Pay the Ferryman (remember that?).
Here is the pisser; I would pay for these songs but they’re not available.
Record execs are probably just below trial lawyers on the devolutionary chart. Too greedy, short sighted and stupid to see a good thing.
But let’s get back to the happy. Thanks so much for finding this rare gem. (Know where I can find the mp3
?

Haven’t a clue. I am still old-skool…meaning my music is on CDs.
It’s on this:

It’s worth it. Lot’s of 80’s crap mixed in with lots of lost classics…
September 18th, 2006 at 10:16 pm
Thanks, man!

Billy,
I don’t think I had seen that video before this evening!
A couple of things struck me about it. The intro guitar sounded liked it was borrrowed from “Hurts So Good.” He looks a lot like my 80s crush, Rick Springfield. If the song Salt In My Tears were recorded today, it would be cut as country. He has a current website: http://www.MartinBriley.com.
I’m curious, though. I wonder when he tours, does he say, “I’m going to do a medley of my hit?”
September 19th, 2006 at 12:46 am
Ha…I am not even sure you could call that a “hit”.
Were it not for MTV, nobody would know who Martin Briley was. He was mostly a session musician and I guess he helped write some stuff too. I’ve occasionally seen him credited, but other than the following, I can’t remember where.
But there was another Martin Briley showing on MTV. See if you can spot him here. This video may spawn about another 30 exchanges:

The jumping dude freaks me out…
September 19th, 2006 at 8:21 am
How did you spot that?
BTW, I think the Jumping Dude is supposed to be his father.
True story, my sister was hanging out at a club in downtown San Jose one night when a limo pulls up and young Julian comes out. She said he was there looking to buy some cocaine. Not surprising, just disappointing.
Say, Billy, didn’t you publish a list of all the CDs you have? If so, do you mind putting the link up again?
September 19th, 2006 at 10:04 am
Uh, no…I don’t think I ever did that. I have about 700 CDs…and quite a few of them are 70’s and 80’s compilations.
If there was a hit song (good or bad)in those two decades, there is a VERY good chance I have it.
More on Julian Lennon…I was a HUGE fan of his back in the day. I bought his first three albums (vinyl). I don’t know if I was mesmerized by how much he sounded like his father or if I just liked his videos.
Three decent albums…then he falls off the face of the planet.
I kept hearing rumors of a Beatles reunion tour with him taking his daddy’s spot on stage…but I guess Paul kept nixing that idea.
Sharon, any insight on that? Since we know you are the big McCartney fan…
September 19th, 2006 at 5:43 pm
Hi Billy,
At the end of the Anthology, Paul addresses why he wouldn’t do a reunion tour with Julian or Sean. It’s when they’re all sitting around the table in the last segment.
I have thought, however, it would be interesting to see Julian, Dhani (George’s son) James (Paul’s son) and Zac (Ringo’s son who plays with The Who) get together. On the other hand, the pressure would be beyond intense.
There was a slight chance of a sort of Beatles reunion when George was still alive, but without John and George, it could never happen. Paul and Ringo have played together many times since both have died, including on a couple of Paul cds, as well as playing together for the Concert For George. (GREAT concert–rent the DVD if you haven’t seen it)
As John said, “The dream is over…”

“On the other hand, the pressure would be beyond intense.”
See, this is the problem when musicians take themselves too seriously. I agree with you, there would probably be too much scrutiny on the kids to pull it off.
I would loved to have seen a reunion in the 80’s after John died. But I suspect that egos and “artistic differences” never really would have made this reality.
Above all…music should be fun. What is great is when a bunch of great musicians can all come together and just play great music without egos getting in the way. Sort of like this:

The kids shouldn’t need to carry on the torch of their parents.
I think it was P.J. O’Rourke who said that Jakob Dylan could sing well and people could understand his lyrics. And he was *criticized* for being “nothing like his dad”.
September 20th, 2006 at 2:56 am
Billy,
I LOVE that song and video. The TW were a great band.
Gordon,
Sad but true about the kids of icons. Jakob could be outstanding and he’d still never be good enough. Look at Sean and Dhani. Sean has a new cd out, but I don’t know anyone who has purchased it. Dhani is also a musician, as is James McCartney, but we never hear anything about them. Only Zac Starkey has been a successful (in the music biz) Beatles’ kid, and that’s because he’s a drummer for The Who and a lot of people don’t even realize who he is, which is probably fine with him.

Looks like this string is finally running out of steam. Cranky and Sharon, it’s been great going Tubing with ya.
In light of recent events, here is my suggestion for another You Tube string:

Billy – you filthy SOB. I have a Murray Head post set to go up in an hour. I set it up this morning. Here you go stealing my idea. Unbelieveable.
No wonder you’re always hanging around here. We obviously think alike.
September 20th, 2006 at 12:47 pm
Crap – now I see that Drudge is using the “One Night in Bangkok” line. Here I thought I was on to something unique and all you scumbags blow up my idea. I quit.

Damn Preston, does that mean that I don’t even get a reservoir tip on your post?
