Time to Hold the Line

October 3rd, 2006 at 8:36 am by Cranky

The Foley scandal is in full blown political mud slinging mode. According to Drudge, the Dems have already arranged their talking points.

3. Be aggressive about how Dems will — and are — protecting children. Dems want to keep the issue poisonous in a way that’s clear and direct to middle America. (In other words: this ain’t earmarks.)

Conservatives have already begun the necessary housecleaning. We will take our lumps, correct the situation and get back on our feet. As bad as this is, it shouldn’t cost the Republicans the election.

Meanwhile, we need to emphasize that politically speaking, Foley’s greatest sin was not being a Democrat. Were he on the other side of the aisle, this would be a minor setback if not the opportunity for a book deal.

If it’s at all possible, I think Foley should be tried in Vermont or Massachusetts.

  1. Jane Says:

If Dems want to sell themselves as protecting children, maybe they should be a little less strident on that whole partial birth abortion thing.

  2. Unpartisan.com Political News and Blog Aggregator Says:

Conservative paper calls for Hastert’s resignation over Foley scandal…

House Speaker Dennis Hastert and other GOP leaders are dismissing suggestions that they should have …

  3. RTG Says:

Tried for what? Has a crime actually been committed? I seriously don’t know. I mean, maybe ‘endangering welfare of a child’ which is a misdemeanor.

Let me be clear: anyone who talks that way to my son is going to have a pistol shoved down their throat. Foley surely would have gone farther if he’d been allowed to, but as far as anyone knows he hasn’t actually touched a child.

Politically he’s deadmeat but let us not get so wrapped up in apologies that we let this stain the whole Republican party.

  4. Preston Taylor Holmes Says:

Yeah – that’s my question? What’s the crime? No one has clarified that part of the scandal for me.

Sure, if he was a Donk, not only would there be no talk of criminal prosecution, they would put him on a cross for being the victim. It would be a tale of persecution, not prosecution. You’d think the booze excuse would have been enough for them to parade him around town and get him a slot on Oafrah.

  5. Gordon Says:

You’d think the booze excuse would have been enough for them to parade him around town and get him a slot on Oafrah.

Or at least a sympathetic phone call from a colleauge with the last name of Kennedy…

  6. RTG Says:

No doubt. I love the ‘I’m an alkie’ excuse. The next time anything bad happens to me, the first thing I’m going to do is check into Promises, thereby protecting myself from all criticism. And prosecution.

  7. jesusland joe Says:

The Republicans should mention at every opportunity the name of Barney Frank, who didn’t have the honor to resign after being caught running an under-age male prostitution ring out of the fricking Congress. This child molester still sits on the Democratic side of the House for crying out loud. What do you Democrats say about that?

  8. Cranky Says:

Good. It sounds like there is a fightin’ mood going on here.

RTG, want to be the first to claim “I am a drunk American?”

  9. Swamp Rabbit Says:

This is much ado about sorta-something. I don’t think the dust has settled enough yet to get a good picture of just exactly what has or has not taken place. Once the truth is known, hang all the guilty bastards regardless of political party.

  10. LissaKay Says:

Maybe if he’s lucky, Foley can get a Mel Reynolds deal.

  11. Doug Says:

If Dems want to sell themselves as protecting children, maybe they should be a little less strident on that whole partial birth abortion thing.

Why would Dems draw the line at partial birth abortion? Given the disturbing number who champion mothers that slaughter their kids after birth, we should just be glad that 30 years of legislative Democrat dominance didn’t give us abortion that’s legal until the fetus graduates high school.

Killing them in their wombs does fall short of protection, I’ll grant, but there’s so much more they could do. They could stop swelling the ranks of incompetant Democrat voters union members teachers under the pretense of needing more, and then protecting them to insure that the voting block stays intact as much mediocrity remains in education as possible. They could develop theories of improving education through things like educating, rather than through integrated busing and nurturing phony self-esteem. They could stop the poisonous, race-baiting drumbeat which informs minority children from their earliest days that “You’re totally screwed anyway, so why even bother trying? Just vote Democrat if you ever want a prayer of having anything.” They could stop cheerleading for the degenerate culture that gives us more children as parents. They could blame school shootings on homicidal will coupled with a lack of respect for life instead of on guns. But wait, that would require linear thinking, which is, I suppose, not a fair expectation.

Partial birth abortion? That only kills a handful of kids a year (child’s play!). Why settle for that when you can ruin them en masse?

I think the Insufferable Prick Party needs to address what it will do for children. To that end, I propose a new federal correctional facility for child predators. Instead of sending them to a normal prison, we send them to a giant pit full of komodo dragons. It will fund itself, at least partly, through 24 hour pay-per-view web cams situated throughout the pit. Hell, it might even turn a profit.

  12. William Teach Says:

To add on to what Jane wrote, if they want to protect children so much, why do they oppose parental notification?

  13. canuck5 Says:

Because, William, that would infringe on the child’s right to make their own decisions. And all libs know that a child, of any age, is old enough to make their own decisions -what with the internet and all, they practically raise themselves.

  14. Marvin Says:

This story ‘started’ on a new Soros funded blog in July 06…
when the whole story is known – methinks Democrat(s) will suffer, I have faith that we will know which Democrat(s) arranged the timing of this ‘news’ concerning messages sent in 2003, 2004, 2005…

  15. Billy Says:

OH! Now it turns out Mark Foley is claiming abuse by a clergyman when he was younger.

Further, his attorney announces this abuse IN THE VERY NEXT SENTENCE after he springs a line about abuse in Foley’s youth having NOTHING TO DO with his clients actions.

Now I didn’t explain that very well, but it’s clear that his attorney is going to try to blame some alleged sexual abuse for his actions.

    BULLSHIT.

Hey, if the guy was abused when he was a youth…well then that sucks. He should EVEN MORE SO understand the effect a sexual predator has on a kid. And yet he did it anyway.

And almost 40 years after the fact, he’s NOW going to commence legal action against the church.

CYA…but let’s not let it work. Foley is not a victim, he is a predator.

Oh…and the attorney finished with this news flash. He’s like us all to know that Foley is a GAY MAN.

    No shit…

  16. RTG Says:

LOL, Cranky! You betcha, I’ll stand up there and proclaim that as a Drunken American, I’m a minority and therefore protected. Love it.

  17. Mel Reynolds Says:

Foley ain’t got nuttin’ on me! He was just chattin’ and pattin’, I was pursuin’ and doin’! Got me a fine under-aged Nubian Queen named “Beverly”, a fine-lookin’ 16 year old campaign worker. I wish ta heyall that her lil”ol friend from ‘dat ‘dere Catholic Skool in that plaid skirt wit’ dem saddle shoes ‘n braces named “Theresa” woulda been up fo’ ‘dat 3-sum ‘dat Bev promised. I was like, “Did I win ‘da lotto?!” Well… Maybe ‘da “Mul-lotto”!

Well, go figyah… Clinton gets me a pardun so I can avoid ‘da 20 in Club Fed, and I hook up wit’ Mastah Booty Baby himself, Revrund Jackson. I wuz told i’d be workin’ ‘da PUSH Coalition. I sure do like ‘dat pushin on ‘dat under-aged Nubian cushion!

  18. geezer Says:

Speaker Pelosi… Chairmen Murtha/Rangel/Dingell… Sen. Majority Leader Reid, or, dare I say it… Clinton…

Not once in my 50 years on earth have I ever seen a stronger connection between Halloween and Election Day.

I just might spend that whole week watching “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,” just to ease the pain.

  19. Sharon Cobb Says:

    Billy,
I was very upset with his lawyer setting up the “abuse excuse.” I wrote about it over at my place.
Cranky, I can almost always find common ground. Instead of getting into partisan politcs, when I saw your headline, I immediately went to YouTube and found “Hold The Line” by Toto! Thank you! I continued to get into a totally 80s big hair band experience while I was there.

  21. Gordon Says:

Just heard on the way in this morning (still no internet at home) that Foley was molested as a child.

Sheesh he’s as predictable as an episode of Gilligan’s Island.

Sharon, for some reason only Toto and REO Speedwagon song were permitted at my Jr. High School dances. Oh yeah, and Eddie Money.

  22. Jane Says:

Also Foley’s attorney is saying he’s gay. It worked for Jim McGreevey (ex-governor of NJ who hired his “special friend” as director of homeland security).

But really: alchoholic, previously abused and currently gay is still no excuse for flirting with a 16 year old. But you would think the Dems hearts would be melting for poor, poor Jim.

  23. Cranky Says:

    You would think…

Jane, get out of Jersey. They are crazy there.

  24. Jane Says:

Its like being behind enemy lines.

  25. Dottie Says:

The democrats – the party of abortion – are suddenly turning themselves into a party who protects children?

    Give Me A Break!!!!

    Foley’s Follies: A Round-Up…

It’s all Foley, all the time. Here’s what locals are saying about this Washington scandal: Sharon Cobb: Mark Foley makes a mockery out of people like me who have worked so hard to overcome adversity and deny it its right……

  29. Doug Says:

I continued to get into a totally 80s big hair band experience while I was there.

You must be the one that rescue workers saved from the spandex and leg warmers.

Sharon, for some reason only Toto and REO Speedwagon song were permitted at my Jr. High School dances. Oh yeah, and Eddie Money.

What? No Billy Squier or Supertramp?

It worked for Jim McGreevey (ex-governor of NJ who hired his “special friend” as director of homeland security).

Thank you, Jane, I’ve been trying to remember the scumbag wormed out of a scandal by explaining that he was “a gay American”.
