Convalescing in Chitown
October 22nd, 2006 at 4:03 pm by Preston Taylor HolmesStill all up in the big city – Mrs. Holmes has headed back down south to continue rearing the kids. It was an excellent weekend away and much needed break for us, but it’s back to harsh reality now.
A few highlights.
First of all, Geno’s Pizza has to be the best pizza I’ve ever eaten. If you prefer wimpy thin-crust pizza with half-assed toppings, Geno’s is not for you. If you appreciate Pizza with some substance to it (and I do) than Geno’s is Nirvana. Nirvana without the shotgun blast to the cranium.
We also went for a run down by the lake Saturday morning – the weather held up for us all day Saturday and it was outstanding. We had no idea that the Chicago Marathon was this weekend, which explained why it was so damned hard to get a room downtown, but it all worked out. My favorite part of our “run” was stopping by the big metallic bean in Millennium Park.
After some popcorn, some shopping and some more eating and drinking, we stopped in at the ESPN Sportszone to watch the UT/Bama game, which sucked right up until the very end. Ali Bubba was liveblogging, but thankfully I was nowhere near a computer all day.
The downside to all of this frivolity was that I forgot to bring the digital camera, which means we had to buy one of those disposable pieces of crap. If any of the photos turn out and are worth posting, I’ll scan ‘em and post ‘em. I’m not terribly optimistic, though.
UPDATE:
There must be some WWE thing going on because I just saw this guy in the hotel lobby. Strange.
I was right – it’s Monday Night Raw.

“Still all up in the big city …”
This word, “city.” I do not think you really know what it means.

Geno’s is the best. We don’t know pizza down in here in Nashvegas compared to Geno’s.
missed your pigskin picks this week. I’m assuming you would have picked the Vols over Bama.
And of course, it’s back to normal here in vandyland.

Dude! Holmes…
You found Geno’s. That place rokks \m/ !! Did you try the real, authentic spumoni?! Everything on the menu is so damn good. I would recommend that anyone over 200lbs avoid using their restrooms, otherwise, you’ll get stuck in that closet with a commode they call a restroom.

Next time try the Lou Malnatti’s pizza chain.
Lou (now departed) started all of the famous Chicago deep dish pizza places (Gino’s, Uno’s, Due’s) and then moved on to start his own in the early 60′s.
His kids carry on and as a long time Chicago resident, I think it is the best Chicago style pizza in the world.

On the pizza note I have to voice a vote for Palermo’s over on 63rd. They have what I think is the best pizza sauce in the world.
I also have to stop by Ricobene’s for a breaded steak sandwich.
Oh, and El Famous Burrito for a steak burrito….damn I am hungry.
