Theft? In Memphis? No Way!

November 3rd, 2006 at 2:37 pm by Preston Taylor Holmes

Looks like my hometown has finally made it big. Electronic voting machine “smart cards” have gone missing from a Memphis-area polling location.

Political insiders have expressed alarm after 12 voter smartcards have gone missing from one Shelby County, TN early vote location!

The cards are used to activate electronic voting machines.

The location at the center of the controversy is Bishop Byrne High School on E. Shelby Drive in Memphis.

The polling place started out with 25 cards. By Wednesday, 11 were missing, says an eyewitness.

The location was given 5 more smartcards on Thursday.

And another card went missing!

Someone possessing a smartcard could use ‘off the shelf equipment’ [equipment that reprograms the card] and alter it to be used multiple times, and cast multiple votes.

Voter fraud in Memphis? No freakin’ way.

This is a new twist on the fine Memphis tradition of robbery – usually it’s stereos, televisions, social security checks, DVD players. Who would have ever suspected that smart cards would fall prey to sticky fingers.

One concerned insider explains: “Shelby County Board of Elections has been notified. They said is was ‘not a big deal’ because, they said, the cards are deactivated. But the reality is, you can buy the equipment at computer stores to reactivate them. It’s on the Internet how to reactivate the cards!”

Meanwhile, The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is reviewing reports by the Shelby County Election Commission that two people voted twice during early voting in Memphis.

Dist. Atty. Gen. Bill Gibbons said he’s referred the cases to the TBI for investigation along with other matters he declined to discuss.

It truly is no big deal, because nobody trusts the numbers that come out of Shelby County anyway. What’s a couple of extra votes? Just ask the Ford Family. They’ve been the primary beneficiaries of Memphis voting shenanigans for decades.

Just another election in the Bluff City.

Thanks to Michele for the tip.

Sadly, I think this would be easier to do than most people think. My husband and I went to early voting yesterday, and the 70+-year old poll mistresses wandering around really weren’t paying much attention to what folks were doing with the cards after they voted. Half the time she was at the table to collect and the other half, she was off somewhere else – would have been very easy for all of us to walk off with the cards.

If the cards are so smart, how did they get lost, hmmmmmmmm?

  4. Cranky Says:

Always finding a conspiracy, eh Jane?

If you’re here, it must be the weekend!!

  5. Vinnie Says:

Of course the cards are smart, Jane, they batted their puppy dog eyes at a few dopes and ended up in nice warm homes rather than the cold, sterile evironment of the local polling place. Where, of course, after being pawed by the unwashed masses, they would be put to sleep and incinerated.

So I think they are very smart cards indeed.

  6. Jane Says:

It would be nice if the smart cards hooked up with the race cards and gave them a clue.

  7. Preston Taylor Holmes Says:

Jane, you are a true wordsmith. The race cards in Memphis will never get a clue – the poverty pimps down there have made their living off of the race cards for decades and it shows no sign of letting up.
