The Hunt For Red November (Reprise)

March 10th, 2007 at 2:37 pm by Smantix

What is it about March that makes my political sensibilities so acute? This time last year, a healthy dose of political Levitra was prescribed by your humble physician to help cure the Right’s electile dysfunction:

THFRN

I used MS Paint but you get the gist.

“Thompson, on the other hand, is immaculate. He guided Roberts to Chief Justice. Has a sound history and voting record. Name recognition. Can carry the South. Quick-witted and an excellent communicator.

People may be nodding their heads towards darkhorses like George Allen but I don’t believe he’s going anywhere and Giuliani is too liberal. And that’s that.”

Now all the kids are doin’ it. And if all the kids are doin’ it, well, that’s a lot of kids doin’ it.

Even one of the Young Turks Tards from Air America liked him. And. And! Had a touch and go experience with reality by admitting he liked Thompson and having the nerve to write about it at the Huffinglue Post.

He plowed Lorrie Morgan like a whipped mule in the fertile, Tennessee Valley and still managed an almost 90% rating from the American Conservative Union.

Of course, I’m biased. We had the privilege of having Thompson as our Senator before he retired shortly after his daughter died from an overdose while battling brain cancer.

This was pre-Terry Schiavo so naturally the local lefties took the opportunity to ridicule him by suggesting that he raised his daughter as a drug addict. Class acts they were/are/will be.

How long should we suffer gladly the professional politicians like the Edwards, Kerrys, Clintons, Hagels, McCains and the rest who view their current station as public servants as a mere launching pad to the highest office? Whose whole life’s work is devoted to telling other people what to do and that they know what’s best? No one’s been clamoring for Mitt Romney or Giuliani. Though they each have their fair share of apologists making excuses for why people on the right should ignore their records.

But the buzz for Thompson is palpable. And for the record, I called him first. So, nyah.

Who deserves to be President? A man not consumed with wanting to be President.

It looks like all the kids over at Hot Air are all … hot (hehe) over the prospect of Fred for Prez – Newt: I diddled while Clinton burned; Update: Is Fred Thompson in? Update: Hillary 46, Brownback 41

Not to mention Michael Silence and his All Fred, All the Time posts!

I guess I can be classified as a ‘lefty’ even though my bona fides might be questioned since I actually voted for Fred Thompson every chance I got.

I don’t pretend to know all the lefty types in Nashville nor do I pretend to speak for anyone besides me, but I really don’t know anyone (personally) who derided Fred’s parenting skills, nor do I remember any serious talk about such a thing. Im not saying that your point is meritless, but I do think you are painting with a brush a bit too wide.

Had I been blogging at the time, you better believe I would have been critical of such nonsense.

When I lived in the greater Green Hills area I often wandered over to the Donut Den on Saturday morning to pick up their amazing old fashioned donuts for the family, and mostly for me. Many Saturday mornings, I would see the Senator sitting by himself quietly reading the newspaper, or chatting with old friends. No entourage, no staged ‘man of the people’ act..just a guy who was already world-famous at the time, drinking coffee and being normal. That always impressed me.

Depending on who the Dems come up with, I might vote for Thompson in the eventuality that he became the G.O.P. candidate. My belief though is that Thompson doesn’t want it bad enough. And actually, that says a helluva lot about him.

    John: This…

“My belief though is that Thompson doesn’t want it bad enough. And actually, that says a helluva lot about him.”

You’re absolutely right and that’s why I’m afraid he won’t run. He has too much common sense to actually want the job. However, if he does decide to, I’ll have to swing back to the GOP because Thompson is as close to the real deal as we’re going to get.

  4. Smantix Says:

This was right before the whole blog revolution took over. The local lefties I’m referring to are still around but you mainly only find them in the comments sections of websites like The Nashville City Paper and the Tennessean.

And, I’d like to thank myself for helping to kill this godforsaken site which was a breeding ground for their diseased thoughts. The whole place was radioactive.

Anyone in particular around today with a blog espousing that opinion and I would have unkindly shot a bird and a pity link in their direction.

But come on John. You know who these people are. The Jeffrahams, Democratic Veterans and egalias of the world. They have no morals or ethics. The brittanys to a lesser extent.

Why does someone have to want to be President “bad enough”? To me, that’s the problem. We’ve got two dozen sociopaths sticking their collective fingers in the wind to tell them how they’re are supposed to think on a given day.

Thompson’s the genuine article though. I’m about as cynical as they come but I have infinite faith in the guy.

I want somebody to have the “fire in their belly” when they are talking about the issues – not when they are talking about furthering their own career at the public trough.

  5. Billy Says:

Via Hot Air, here is the latest in Fredmania.

To be honest, until the past few days I only knew of Thompson from Days of Thunder.

Meanwhile, Hillary has gone from a black Southern Baptist to an underdog Catholic.

I hear next week she will take the form of a Hispanic Mormon…

  6. ViVi Says:

Uh… O/T but speaking of March, where’s the March Madness tourney? I’ve been gone for nearly a year and re-emerged in blogdom here at SMB hoping to find the bball tourney challenge.

  7. Smantix Says:

    Goddamn Southern Utah.

  8. see-dubya Says:

I’m sorry, but an actor as President? That would never happen.

  9. Carl Says:

I sincerely hope Thompson runs. I’d vote for him in a heartbeat. And I am that rare breed: a conservative Democrat.
