Why’d They Go And Have To Ruin It?
April 1st, 2007 at 4:05 pm by CrankyMy memories, that is. We all know that our entertainers’ political and social views are often at odds with ours.
We make an agreement with them – keep making good recordings/movies/stories and we can agree to disagree. You’ll still get my $20.
But what about our long-time heroes now getting a little long in the tooth and quite, oh what’s the word, “bitchy”?
First up, Elton John displaying his contempt for Christians. I guess he wasn’t kidding about burning down the mission.
Next up, the Pythons (sirloin tip, JunkYardBlog). Terry Gilliam shared this bit of insight and self-back-patting:
Gilliam’s story was remembered due to a Guardian piece penned by the increasingly unhinged Terry Jones. In his old age, Terry does for humor what Jimmy Carter does for diplomacy in his. Both should have known when to step out of the limelight.
I could only read the first two paragraphs and about 20 comments before I started to feel sick for the state of civilization.

I’m not going to throw away my Elton John CDs or my DVD of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
It’s important to remember that some of the most brilliant creative minds the world has ever known belonged to people who were completely batshit crazy.
Van Gogh and Artaud were both nuts. Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd was probably schizophrenic.
So instead of villifying Sir Reginald or the Python guys, perhaps we should try to consider the possiblity that they are in the first stages of dementia…

I see, understand that they are mentally deteriorating and love them for what they were.
That sounds great.

You’d do that for your own mother, right?
