God Help Us All
April 10th, 2007 at 11:15 am by Preston Taylor HolmesThis is just getting stupid. But if you want stupid – look no further than our Federal Government. They take stupid to new levels every time they convene.
The bipartisan proposal, which its sponsors expect to pass the Congress with wide support, calls for the director of national intelligence to conduct the first-ever “national intelligence estimate” on global warming.
The effort would include pinpointing the regions at highest risk of humanitarian suffering and assessing the likelihood of wars erupting over diminishing water and other resources.
The measure also would order the Pentagon to undertake a series of war games to determine how global climate change could affect US security, including “direct physical threats to the United States posed by extreme weather events such as hurricanes.”
Global warming as a national security issue? The Pentagon taking on hurricanes?
Only in our current socialism-infected, idiotic political climate could any of this even be talked about without resulting waves of laughter from everyone within earshot.
I realize that our “new” congress views the man-made global warming fantasy as a bigger national security threat than the islamic beheaders who are actually trying to kill us, but how about just a shred of common sense up there, Feds? I realize that would probably result in some type of seizure or stroke, due to the traumatic nature of such a shift, but give it a shot.

PTH,
To be completely fair, I almost blew my lid too when I saw that article. But then I realized that the Pentagon has plans in place for a response to a nuclear strike, a meteor impact, invasion from Canadians, and lots of other silly scenarios.
And if you want an honest assessment of what it would mean vis-a-vis “war over water” you will likely get a report back about humanitarian efforts to build canals, move people to where the water is and other common sense ideas. But I might be way wrong here too.

When will you 6-meat nimrods get with the program? Haven’t you read that the global warming debate is OVER…and you neocons lost?
I applaud our federal government for finally taking the steps necessary to avoid another Katrina. After all…THIS is what we should be using our national intelligence resources for.
When you Rethuglicans ran Congress, all you wanted to do was allocate money and man-power to an Islamophobic witch-hunt.
Let me know when you knuckle-draggers finally figure out the superiority of Democrat leadership.

Interesting point, Belch. If I had time, I’d do a little research. But instead, I’ll just let my gut reaction to the story sit there with no further review. Besides, it’s time for lunch.

Taking the whole Man-Made Global warming zealotry out of the arguement, weather disasters, earthquakes, hurricanes etc. do have an impact on third world countries and their resistance to dangerous regimes. When the weather does weird stuff, it impacts war and peace, because it impacts societies economically. Crazy weather also affects our soldiers ability to fight.
I’m assuming that congress is not implying that some country actually has the power to harness the wind and use hurricanes against us. Maybe that’s where I’m misguided.

Remember when Carter was embargoing the Russians? The catchphrase of the day was “Wheat as a weapon”. I thought that was silly too.

Can I get a Carbon Credit, Amen?!

I don’t remember when Carter was embargoing the Russians. I was just interested in getting to Sesame Street.

Both the CIA and the Pentagon are under the control of the White House not the Congress. You guys need a refresher course in 7th grade civics.
[Editor's note: Mr. Ryan, from his flop house appt. in New York, has a compulsive need to "whack 'Red Staters'". Coincidentally, he also types with one hand. Please humor him]

Preston, it seems like J.R. is “humoring” himself…so I’ll just leave the humoring to him.
John Ryan, perhaps THE BOSTON GLOBE needs the “refresher course in 7th grade civics”:
“The bipartisan proposal, which its sponsors expect to pass the Congress with wide support…”
What does that say?
Well, never mind. No use trying to engage you in any back and forth since it seems like you can do that yourself.

doh!
anyways, i don’t think George Orwell would be at all surprised by this proposal. Nor would Marx or Engels.

My employer isn’t paying me the wages I deserve. Now THAT is a national security issue. (wonder when this won’t be a joke?)
