Michael Moore Cuban Sicko Crisis
May 10th, 2007 at 8:00 am by CrankyMichael Moore is being investigated by the Treasury Department for:
“This office has no record that a specific license was issued authorizing you to engage in travel-related transactions involving Cuba,” Dale Thompson, OFAC chief of general investigations and field operations, wrote in the letter to Moore.
It does seem like harassment. I wonder if Spielberg, Walters and countless other Castro sycophants have faced Cuban travel violations from the Treasury Department.
That said, what does this faux populist media whore expect to say with this:
Hmmm, what could be more contrived than taking victims of Bush’s war to the home of free universal heathcare (and 100% literacy)?
Only his true believers can possibly buy the b.s. with a straight face.
Who knows, taking on Bush is popular. HMOs? Maybe not. The newness was exciting with “Roger and Me”. But this “man of the people” schitck probably won’t play well outside the college demographic.
Let’s close with a word from the Mighty Fred:
“I have no expectation that Moore is going to tell the truth about Cuba or health care,” wrote Thompson, the subject of speculation about a possible presidential run. “I defend his right to do what he does, but Moore’s talent for clever falsehoods has been too well documented.”
A deep cleansing breath of fresh air, no?

Hog Headed Bastard!

What a tool…
As far as “harassment”…I’ll bet Spielberg and Walters went through the proper channels and obtained proper licensing.
But the law doesn’t apply to a “hog-headed bastard” like Moore. He feels like he can thumb his nose at authority like a petulant child any time he pleases.
As far as life in Cuba goes…if it was the idyllic paradise Moore will portray it as, why do thousands risk their lives each year in the attempt to raft to Florida?
And Swampy…you sure are getting a lot of life out of the “hog-headed” thing. Glad to see you didn’t let Rosie rain on your parade!

1. I knew my phone was tapped!
2. No matter how much you hate Moore, you and every American should be afraid of the further erosion of our rights when they (the government) can actually do this to Moore, or any other “free” American.

Sharon,
What specifically are they “doing” to Moore? Please tell us how Michael Moore’s “rights” have been infringed upon in any way.
The United States has had a trade embargo with Cuba since 1962…and in fact, this embargo was made MORE stringent under the CLINTON Administration. The Treasury Department is following the law…Michael Moore did NOT follow the law in making his trip.
OK Sharon, I have asked you a specific question…I’d love a response. How is it an “erosion of rights” in investigating someone who has apparently violated the law?

Billy,
Filmmakers and journalists go to Cuba all the time. Moore is being persecuted for political reasons.
May 11th, 2007 at 7:16 am
I wish.
You can’t complain about “erosion of rights” and defend Castro in the same breath.
May 11th, 2007 at 9:43 am
Sharon, before US filmmakers and journalists go to Cuba they must obtain proper licensing. Moore failed to do that.
Ridiculously, he applied under a “journalists” license. That would be like Dr. Kevorkian describing himself as a “health care provider”.
Moore is not being “persecuted”. He should be “prosecuted” however. He selectively chose to ignore the law. I guess we should all have the flexibility to determine which laws we can obey and which we can ignore.

The sicko is the guy who gets paid millions to spout anti-American propaganda and then exploits 9/11 victims by taking them to Cuba for free healthcare while his bankroll is sitting fat and none the lighter.
Maybe they signed away their dignity over breakfast at Denny’s.

It’s not harrassmnent. A license is required for all U.S. citizens who visit Cuba. And the licensing procedure is very simple:

I think the whole stink was intentional on Mr. Moore’s part. Say what you will about him, he’s an expert in self-promotion.
May 12th, 2007 at 5:27 pm
Watching the mileage Moore is getting from this, I’m inclined to agree WEVS1. It seems like a deliberate provocation designed to garner attention and rekindle the “little guy vs. the Bushies” thing.
May 12th, 2007 at 6:30 pm
This is about the only situation where Moore gets to be “the little guy” I take it.

Gee Smantix…what a mean-spirited personal attack on someone’s physical appearance. Aren’t you above that sort of thing?
(Besides, Swamp Rabbit is better than you at it.)

On Michael Moore
For your consideration.

Moore’s agenda has been to capitalize on public issues. Health Care is not his issue, it is just another of his movies.
The enamoured media have fallen under Moores power and participates in his self-promotion.
They overlook the bigger story.
These links may offer you a bit more information on Michael Moore and Flint back in the 1980’s.
It is just amazing that Moore would turn on Jim Musselman and Ralph Nader who both did so much for him.
