Goodnight, Garfield Dave
June 1st, 2007 at 10:48 pm by Preston Taylor HolmesAnd it’s goodbye to Garfield Dave. I think he means it this time.
As I said last time you “quit,” you’ve always got a login at the Buffet, should you feel like slumming.
You’ll be missed, Dave.

Yea. I’d say that is calling it quits for certain.
Dave brings up a lot of issues that are worth reflecting on though. And one of the main reasons why I never delve deeply into the personal.
The greatest question being “why does anyone do this”? It’s bangs for everyone to start writing and wimpers when everyone inevitably quits but the motivation behind doing it is the key.
Are you doing it to vent? Some transformative exercise? Are you doing it because you narcissistically want someone important to link to you? Or worse, you waste your time concerned about people linking to you in the first place and censoring yourself without even knowing it.
It’s an conversation millions of people need to have within themselves.

Oh, I could have the conversation within myself. But that’s not like me, so I’ll just post it here. I’m pretty much an open book. I’m more concerned about oversharing on my blog than I am about privacy, but I don’t want to come off as narcissistic either.
I started blogging when I pulled my kids out of public school to keep track of daily activities. My forgetfulness is my main enemy when it comes to homeschooling. With my blog, I can look back and see that we weren’t lazy even though there wasn’t a lot of paperwork. It’s morphed a bit into daily musings about other stuff, since I’m more certain of what the kids are achieving.
I’ve also found a lot of old friends through my blog. Even a childhood friend from Texas that I hadn’t seen in more than 25 years.
It’s obvious that something really painful has happened to Dave. He’s very depressed. I hope he’s not truly sad for the rest of his life. I disagree with him about blogs being for lonely folks. I have plenty of friends, but a lot of them are left leaning and I can’t have a reasonable dialogue with then on a lot of issues. The internet is a place to go to vent a bit without burning any bridges.

“I have plenty of friends, but a lot of them are left leaning and I can’t have a reasonable dialogue with them on a lot of issues.”
I think that’s why I started too, Michele. Have a verbal disagreement with friends who might be a little less informed (or who knows, maybe they are more informed, but just stupid)…and they suddenly aren’t your friends anymore.
Plus there’s this. In this wonderful “blogosphere” we can have deep and meaningful discussions on such important topics as “which ’80s video was the crappiest?”…and with a view clicks actually back up our claims.
It’s like the neighborhood bar, without the cigarette smoke.

Don’t waste your time on a 6th tier blog like this, Dave.
A Jawa login awaits. Fame, fortune, and exclusive access to the coveted Sandcrawler await you.

“It’s like the neighborhood bar, without the cigarette smoke.”
Well put. I agree.
