I had similar experiences trying to update Adobe as I did installing Norton.

Thanks for the tip to turn off “automatic updates”. These software vendors really impose themselves on us.

Joules, don’t. I work with technology all day and still can’t quite get it. Ever taken a screen shot (alt+print screen), pasted it into MS Paint and tried to click on the image’s close box? You feel like one of those parakeets who fights with his reflection in the mirror.

What a useless POS program. Figures that most Gov’t forms are PDF that you can’t fill out without buying the whole expensive program.

To get rid of the annoying “let me take control of your machine, stop it, and annoy you with endless notifications until you submit to my updates” screen:

Start/programs/Adobe Reader/edit/preferences/updates/update and notification check/ then click on “do not automatically check for critical updates”.

As if any of them are really “critical”.

Cranky: There isn’t an obvious check box in that window for “don’t ask again” but you can turn off Adobe’s auto-update feature.

I don’t have an IPod, and I use Windows Media. But every few days, my installation of QuickTime asks if I want to upgrade to ITunes + QuickTime. And I’ve never figured out how to turn this off without turning off update notifications for the QuickTime software itself.

Argh! I get that too!

Like I even know where my installation CD is, which Acrobat requires be in the hard drive before it installs the updates and leaves me the %&$! alone until the next series of helpful updates.
