Stop the ACLU finds that the Seattle Public Schools need a good stopping too.
From a staff letter penned by the Seattle School District’s own Director of Equity, Race & Learning Support.
With so many holidays approaching we want to again remind you that Thanksgiving can be a particularly difficult time for many of our Native students.
Says who? Does little James Proudfeather in the second row of the advanced algebra class feel the weight of 300 years of White Oppression? Or does he begin to feel the need to assume the role of victim as condescending adults construct a racial conflict where none exists?
OK, so the school district wants to be sensitive to their Native American students. Let’s spot them 10 points for caring. But who do they turn to seek understanding? Why the stick-up-our-asses-chip-on-our-shoulder Oyate organization out of Berkeley. Because really, the only history worth telling is the history of class struggle, racism and White Imperialism. I guess the other Native Americans are busy hawking Mazola Corn Oil and crying over pollution.
Oyote shines the bright light of truth on the myths of Thanksgiving including this gem:
Myth #1: “The First Thanksgiving” occurred in 1621.
Fact: No one knows when the “first” thanksgiving occurred. People have been giving thanks for as long as people have existed. Indigenous nations all over the world have celebrations of the harvest that come from very old traditions; for Native peoples, thanksgiving comes not once a year, but every day, for all the gifts of life. To refer to the harvest feast of 1621 as “The First Thanksgiving” disappears Indian peoples in the eyes of non-Native children.
Did you follow that? The White person’s holiday named “Thanksgiving” is offensive because “Indigenous nations all over the world have celebrations of the harvest”. To imply that there is one day is deeply insensitive.
This holiday season, lets be thankful for the Seattle School district. Because without them, we might might start taking our precious sanity for granted.
