The Unkindest Cut

If I had a subscription, it would be getting canceled about now.
By endorsing a pro-illegals, pro-abortion, blow dry with the principles of a weather vane, National Review has gambled away what last bit of conservative street cred they had.
Bill Buckley should be rolling in his grave.
From Jonathan Adler at The Corner:
[Note: Just a reminder, while NR is pro-Romney, I'm pro-Fred and anti-Huck.]
Other than that, no one else at the Corner thinks it’s worth talking about.

I believe Mr. Buckley is still alive, if not all that well.
And sadly this is still more evidence that he is no longer in charge of NR.

OK…what if?
I think we have established that our opinions differ on Romney. And I don’t think that he is Butt”F”ingly Gay…
But what if he does turn out to be the nominee? Do you then not support him if he is running against Hillary or Obama?
As liberals like to say…”just asking questions…”

Ain’t dat a bitch…

Matthew is technically correct in body if not in spirit.
Romney is not gay. NR/NRO is not gay. This endorsement is what’s gay.
That is a good question Nigel. I don’t think I can support him. It’s not his religion. I vote for Christians all of the time who don’t share my beliefs and probably harbor more antipathy than Romney would.
No, I can’t support him because of what he is. A chameleon. It is the principle of it. That, and for the first time in my life I would like to be able to vote for the person I want to support instead of what’s decided by my superiors long in advance. Reagan had been out of office for more than a term before I could vote.
So let’s see the pedigree that’s been trotted out since then: Bush/Quayle, Dole/Kemp, Bush/Cheney. These tickets have all the excitement of wet dish rags at the end of a long shift.
I’ve read NRO pretty consistently for the last dozen or so years and this official endorsement by the editors is easily one of the worst things I can recall coming from that quarter.
Some of their shock troops may be injected into a few comment threads to put down the insurrection. Come on now, you’re not making any sense – do you want Hillary for President?
So yea. When I hear praise about “the virtues” of George Bush “without the flaws” – I do not find that encouraging. Bush easily tops my Buyer’s Remorse All-Time List.

Actually, Buckley’s off his rocker too. He recently said he wished he could ban tobacco. This, from one of the few anti-drug-war conservatives.
