Bush in Bed with Saudis – America Screwed

May 17th, 2008 at 4:15 pm by Cranky

Precious, isn’t it?

I must say I do agree with the blushing bride on this statement:

“Our problem in America gets solved when we aggressively go for domestic exploration. Our problem in America gets solved if we expand our refining capacity, promote nuclear energy and continue our strategy for the advancing of alternative energies as well as conservation,” he said.

“One interesting thing about American politics these days is those who are screaming the loudest for increased production from Saudi Arabia are the very same people who are fighting the fiercest against domestic exploration, against the development of nuclear power and against expanding refining capacity.”

Ask a Dem what they would do to fix the oil problem and it always comes down to taxing “Big Oil” or increasing the tax you pay. I think there is some kind of voodoo magic that makes this the ideal solution.

Sensible solutions, even the most modest, seem to be too close to people’s back yards.

Back in the 70’s I believe there was a Gallup poll question to the effect: THE ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BE PROTECTED REGARDLESS OF COST. Sixty something percent of the people polled answered YES. Actually, it was a pretty stupid poll question but that didn’t stop the greens from trotting it out every time they thought a species might be endangered or someone proposed to build a new power plant or refinery.
Oddly enough the greenies haven’t trotted it out lately. Maybe because people are just beginning to realize what the COST really is.

THe answer to our energy problem is just flowing by us.

Its not just Bush in bed with the Saudi’s. It would be interesting to see how much money is flowing from Saudi Arabia into the pockets of Congress.

  4. Cranky Says:

Good point Tboid. It seems like there is no room in their thinking for the possibility that we can responsibly pull coal or oil out of the ground without disrupting the surrounding eco-system.

In talking with a younger co-worker, he seemed to feel that the Colorado question about oil-shale (mentioned in the second link) was an either-or. Either get affordable oil and stab Mother Gaia throught the heart or leave it alone completely.

  5. Cranky Says:

Ralph, if I understood your comments correctly, then no, you cannot use hydroelectric. It stops Salmon from spawning.

  6. Brian Says:

I’ve heard from some people that American oil companies aren’t in a big hurry to drill in the US because “the last one with the oil wins”.

This assumes that a century or two in the future that we are all still going to be using oil with the same abandon as now.

I guess we need that Animal Farm moment where a hidden camera goes into the boardroom and all of American executives are dressed like sheiks.

I’ve passed the point of no return on this issue though. It is cheaper to rent a moving van than to own a pick-up truck.

  8. annika Says:

We should drill and not worry. Even if there’s some environmental impact, the earth recovers quickly. In 89, the Exxon Valdez dumped 10,800,000 gallons of oil in the water. Today there’s only 0.2% of that oil left. Under any sensible cost benefit analysis, we should have started tapping this resource years ago. But thanks to BS like the poll Tbird cited we haven’t.
