An American Carol Movement

October 2nd, 2008 at 4:20 pm by Cranky

[NOTE: I have Buffet access from work, but not home. Go figure. So while I have a moment, here are my pre-viewing thoughts. - Cranky]

I’d like to think that there is no bigger fan of the Zucker brother’s comedic genius than me. Their jokes shoot at you at 100 miles, so even if 80% miss, the remaining 20% finish the kill. I’m not ashamed to say that Kentucky Fried Movie and Airplane! have made me the well-balanced person I am today.

So you can imagine what great news it was to learn that my hero David Zucker took a rightward turn politically.

So why am I filled with dread about An American Carol, which opens tomorrow?

I want this movie to be a smashing success so much it hurts. That is the concern.

The movie is being billed as a way to send a message to the Hollywood Liberal establishment and give them a poke in their politically adolescent eyes. Great!

The downside is that I don’t think a slapstick movie is the best vehicle for a movement*. The movie has been panned before the fact by all the right people. But if it really sucks? What then? The door to making movies for the other half of the country gets shelved for a few more years perhaps.

Personally, I just hope it isn’t too heavy-handed. Humor in the Airplane! vein isn’t known for its subtlety or nuance.

Since I’m not a blogging A-Lister, I didn’t have the opportunity to see the screening. I’ll be there on opening night, however.

* Full disclosure, I signed up and will plug this movie. I’ll dance on tables in theater lobbies if called upon and if it’s good, I’ll see it many, many times. If it sucks, I’ll only see it many times.

    Ah, great minds think alike.

    And then there’s us.

I think it promises to be pretty good. If O’Reilly can slap the Michael Moore analogue silly in the movie then I sure as hell want to pony up $8 to see it.

Even if it sucks, I’ll pony up $8 to see that imagery.

  2. DC Says:

    Crank,

Maybe we could have a point/counter-point with that tree slapping you down … when you were trying to get a good slap in yourself?

    How are you, man?

  3. Brian Says:

Let me know if it sucks or not Cranky and I’ll be there tomorrow.

  4. Lee Says:

I’ll catch it in theaters. And yes, there is that fear of suckiness. But even if it sucks they’re getting my $8 for effort.

The folks counting box office receipts don’t have to know if I liked it or not.

  5. Nigel Says:

    Opening today…and I’ll be there.

    Screw you, liberal Hollyweird…
