National Iowahawk Day

March 12th, 2009 at 7:50 pm by Cranky

Tomorrow is National Iowahawk Day. I’d be proud to say I knew him way back when – except that I don’t know him. These days, he doesn’t return my calls. He hangs with Australian car buffs and hobnobs with the Hollywood set.

But let me take you back in the early days of the Internet. Those were carefree times when all of us wingnut bloggers set up shop as an alternative to shouting at the TV in the aftermath of 9/11. Dan Rather and Peter Jennings were trying to create the next Vietnam and Bush bashing was in its infancy.

At the time, protobloggers ruled the world. Jonah Goldberg was showing the old guard at National Review that this whole dial-up thing had potential, Drudge was becoming a daily read for conservatives who didn’t know others of their own kind even existed and this guy named Burge at the Cybercast News Service was bringing the funny.

That is when I found this:

“Graduates of the School of Journalism, you will write the first draft of history. Or, if the deadline’s really tight, you can download various pieces of the first draft of history from Google and then put your name on it. As a member of the fourth estate, you are the nation’s watchdog. Corrupt businessmen and politicians will fear your mighty CTRL-C, CTRL-V skills. You will be scrupulously fair and unbiased and follow the story wherever it leads, as long as it won’t end up giving ammo to right-wing weirdos. While journalism jobs continue to decline, take heart in the fact that yours is a noble calling in which nobody really checks your resume, especially at the New York Times.”
– David Burge, Hail to Thee, [Insert College Name Here], (CNSNews.com), May 23, 2003

I wrote him an email of appreciation and I’ll never forget his reply, “Thanks. Remember to keep laughing at the Left.” I was very moved by that and have been a fan ever since.

* Don’t bother to find the original link, the archive is gone. But the Iowahawk is here to stay.

    Internet Archive to the rescue!

Thanks Jim. Cranky’s quote aroused my appetite but the whole thing was filling.
