Misc. Geekery

March 27th, 2009 at 2:38 pm by Cranky

Sure there is a lot going on what with the economy melting down and all.

But I wanted to quickly share with you some technical geekery.

I recently my home PC was infected by the Virtumonde virus. (Hence the lack of Photoshops last week) This is one the nasty cuss that attaches itself very deep in your operating system memory.

Well, I finally killed it dead using ComboFix.

If McAfee is the National Guard and SpyBot Search & Destroy is the Special Forces, the ComboFix is a freakin’ nuclear warhead.

By the way, I do recommend SpyBot because it is a very smart and efficient tool. It is free but the authors will gladly accept donations. They’ve earned a big one from me.

On an unrelated note, I have a tips and tricks blog that I occasionally update. If you’re so inclined, check out Stupid Code Tricks.

Think its a part of the Virtuemonde that I cant click on the combo link with out IE crashing?

  2. Gordon Says:

Ooh, that sounds bad. I don’t think so, but if you have Firefox, use that instead (and at every opportunity).

  3. Bobby Says:

I have heard, but have never used/seen firefox.

IE is on the laptop, so i use it

  4. Navin Says:

Also check out “superantispyware.” It’s not the Nuclear Option that Combofix is, but it’s very effective.

  5. Chuck Says:

    Hey Cranky,

Thanks for the link. I got Virtumonde when it was first out and none of the tools (including Spybot S&D) would do much with it. I ended up doing a low level format on my hard drive. The variant I go did something to the boot sector.

Glad to hear that something can be done, short of the “nuclear option”.

    Chuck

  6. Gordon Says:

Yeah, Chuck. I was about 5 minutes away from doing an fdisk.

  7. Gordon Says:

Bobby, I tried to send you ComboFix, but at least your AOL virus filter is working like a champ. It bounced back.

  8. Bobby Says:

Darn. I wish i knew more about this crap.

Odd that it bounced back, wouldnt it go into my spam folder if anything?
