Senator Alexander Wants You To Give/Serve!
March 27th, 2009 at 3:38 pm by Preston Taylor HolmesUPDATE:
The MANDATORY VOLUNTEERISM part of this bill is not gone, they just moved it to house bill HR 1444. The bill text is here. The mandatory language and “four year service academy” language are all back.
Big surprise, now we have another bill to fight. You know what to do.
The so-called “Give” act – the bill that aims to create an army of 250,000 paid “volunteers” that will be an additional Dim-O-Crack voting bloc – has passed the Senate with the loving endorsement of many, many RINOs, including our own embarrassment, very special Senator Lamar Alexander.
On the bright side, Senator Corker was on the right side of this one, so I’ve just called to thank him for his vote. We have to give them props when they do the right thing, which means there will rarely be a need to call and thank Lamar! for his votes.
We’ve been covering it, as has Malkin.
The House passed the “Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act” – or the GIVE Act – last week. The Senate took up the companion “SERVE Act” Tuesday afternoon. According to a Congressional Budget Office analysis of the Senate bill, S. 277, the bill would cost “$418 million in 2010 and about $5.7 billion over the 2010-2014 period.” And like most federal programs, these would be sure to grow over time. The bills reauthorize the Clinton-era Americorps boondoggle program and an older law, the Domestic Volunteer Service Act of 1973.
Read the whole thing. The bill will now go to be reconciled by both houses of congress, where they will slip in even more spending and likely put the “mandatory volunteerism” clause back into it. Why? Because they know you aren’t paying attention. Or are you?
Here are your good guys in the Senate, at least on this bill:

I just got off the phone with Brian Bilbray (R-CA). He will not support any Bill with the coercive/extorting language that is contained in HR1444. He supports the Virginia Fox Amendment to the previous Bill, as well as this one. Get on the phones, peoples!

@YS – thanks for the heads up. @OneL – double crap.

I have no professional (read: non-vulgar) response to the congress-critters supporting the bill, so until I can come up with something that doesn’t involve those words I have to remain silent.
Dammit.

LK, try this: “When the government puts a shovel in your hands and forces you to dig a ditch, you are no longer a citizen.”

Funny that a black man who likes to compare himself to Lincoln is presiding over an administration dead set on bringing back slavery.

Michele, it’s called reparations. Just like all those evil white retirement riches that just got flushed down the crapper with the market crash.
And Gabe, you know what they can do with their shovel. Think Cleavon Little.

michele, that may not exactly fit the definition of irony, but it is irrefutable proof that the universe is not a place without a wicked streak of humor.
Gabriel… you got that right. I have a feeling that we’re going to be running low on shovels and that hands are going to be required at some point to dig that ditch regardless

I read over section 4 a few times. I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but the damn New Speak is what is getting in the way of people realizing that this bill is to introduce a fascist program in America. The word “Volunteer” doesn’t even belong in this bill. This bill is about instituting the draft for “national service” whatever the hell that means. It uses the term “for all able young people” for crying out loud!
This whole bill is predicated on the notion that the American people exist at the behest of the government.
Good Quotation:
“How do you tell a communist? Well, it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin.”

Does anyone remember the Brownshirts of Nazi Germany? It might be worth your time to refer to the past history. I fought in the later stages of that war. I did not fight for what Our president and his cohorts are doing to this country. God help us help ourselves

Donald, thank you for your service. Apparently we are some of the few who remember our history as Obama’s Fascist administration is moving us in the same direction of the original jackbooted brownshirts.

Well, Donald, he’s proven he’s already big into symbols designed to elicit emotional response. If he suddenly starts having his marketing dept. design SA-style patches for his mandatory “volunteer corps” we’ll know the end is nigh.
Makes me ill and it is enough to set the wife off on an anxiety attack every time I bring up the day’s events.
As Preston says, thank you for your service. I wish more people would study history with enough acumen to understand what led to those events rather than just rote memorization of dates.
