Interesting Discussion – Republicans and Nicotine

June 13th, 2009 at 10:46 am by Cranky

Duncan says:

OK, I’m done with the Republican party.

Both of my Senators from Texas voted for this. No. I don’t smoke. Never even put a cigarette into my mouth. But this continuation of the nanny state and take over of another industry makes me ill. Only 17 nays according to Malkin’s roll call. Way too many Republicans voted for this. I’m done. Kaput. It is over. There will never be another vote for a Republican from this guy again.

In response to this news item:

Congress struck the government’s strongest anti-smoking blow in decades Thursday with a Senate vote to give regulators new power to limit nicotine in cigarettes, drastically curtail ads and ban candied tobacco products aimed at young people.

There is a good discussion in the comments that goes deeper than nanny-states, RINOs and Libertarianism.

  1. Brian Says:

If the government can now decide what chemicals go into cigarettes and it allows, even one, that is known to be bad for you, cause cancer, etc…are they now not the de facto peddlers of death themselves?

Telling a company it cannot advertise is prohibition in spirit if not the letter of the law. Replace “cigarettes” with “alcohol” or “hamburgers” and you can see exactly where this is going.

Licking your tofu-sicle on the high speed nerf light rail on the way to the Tolerance Square.

  2. Cranky Says:

It’s sick Kabuki theater. Politicians love the punitive taxes and the high moral ground that comes with punishing Big Tobacco. But if they are so virtuous, just outlaw it already.

As far as regulation of content. Yeah, what’s different between this or trans-fat activism.

  3. Preston Taylor Holmes Says:

Duncan is correct, as usual. I think this GOP is finally done. Stick a fork in ‘em. Right in the eye.

  4. Swamp Rabbit Says:

I smoke, will continue to smoke and I’m growing my own tobbaco. I have 150 plants set out and they are doing great. After I cure them and use what I want and next years crop comes in I’m gonna’ give away what’s left to the smokers here in this area. F*#k the b*stards, their regulations and their taxes!
