Sadly, a local icon passed away yesterday afternoon.  Doris Demos of the world-renowned, if not Mid-TN renowned, Demos’ restaurant chain died in Murfreesboro:

“She was the heart and soul of Demos’, and she made the heart and soul the way she did with her kids, which was with discipline of the staff — and she did it with 100 percent love,” he said.Peter explained that his mother had been in good health her entire life, but suffered a massive stroke Tuesday night that caused hemorrhaging next to her brain stem. She died on Wednesday afternoon.

I started going to Demos’ shortly after they opened when I attended MTSU.  Mrs. Demos was an omnipresent fixture.  Everything was always outstanding – the food, the staff – everything.  Especially the price.

One night, and this is my only Doris Demos story, I ordered a steak that might have been a little too rare and did not feel so well afterwards.  In what was sure to be a sign of things to come, I left a negative comment card on the table.

Bright and early the very next morning, I got a personal phone call from Mrs. Demos inviting me to come back and that she would take care of everything.  And she did.   That’s been over 15 years ago as much as it pains me to say and to this day I still go there for a bowl of baked chicken and rice soup whenever I start feel a cold coming on.

Godspeed, Mrs. D and condolences to the family.   You are already missed.

I just got back from seeing Avatar in 3D with my son and brother-in-law who is spending the holidays with us.

Quick impression – I loved Avatar. I loved it for the same reason I loved Independence Day; jaw-dropping CGI without any burdensome plot. Full disclosure: I consider 90 minutes of things blowing up a completely satisfactory use of $10 not unlike the people of Idiocracy enjoying their biggest hit movie.

Avatar contains some of the most spectacular visuals I’ve ever seen. The 3D is not overpowering, but rather it creates a lush dream world that is somewhere between a Thomas Kinkade painting and an early 70s Yes album cover.

Humorously enough, for all the magnificent 3D visuals, the characters could not be more 2D. I won’t go into the details because there are so many good reviews. Some links to Big Hollywood reviews here.

Even worse than Cameron’s mediocre ability to flesh out characters is his unimaginative dropping of such politically loaded gems like “shock and awe” and “fight terror with terror” into the mouths of the villains. Seriously, if he wants the genius moniker, I suspect he could have worked a little harder at it.

I knew about Cameron’s lefty agenda going in, so that didn’t really phase me. Besides, all I need to know about what he thinks about me is captured in this fan video.

So they made him director of their black-studies program.

These Senators are nothing less than traitors. There is NOTHING in the Constitution that allows them to take over this massive sector of the economy. Get involved in 2010, this is the best chance we may have ever had to get these Marxists out of office and back on the streets. A gang member who told police he killed a stranger to gain rank in the group is back on the streets, detectives said.

The average bond for someone charged with first-degree murder who confesses is about $125,000. If the person is a danger to the community or a flight risk, $500,000 is common.

Police said Christian Walters is both of those, but all he needed was $7,500 to get out of prison for Christmas.

Walters said he’s a member of the Crips and that when he saw Dontrell McFadden with a red bandanna in his pocket near the Nashboro Village Golf Course in October, he felt disrespected.

After a brief meeting with his friends, he returned and fatally shot McFadden, said police.

The Democrat, Judge “Three Card” Monte Watkins is offering to let (see update at bottom) a self-confessed murderer who is a flight risk back out on the street for a mere $7,500.  Did it ever occur to Your Honor that this time of year a lot of people are wearing Red and Green and given Walters’ admitted sensitivity to attire reflecting colors across a certain end of the spectrum that this might not be the right moment to expose him to such onslaughts?  It’s disrepectful!  And you know what he does when he feels disrespected.

For a flight risk, you don’t have to set bail at all. This was purely elective and more than hard to believe that it wasn’t intentional.  As WSMV correctly notes, the standard bail for first degree homicide is $100,000.00 to $500,000.00 much less $75k.

For all you Bloods and Gangster Disciples out there, now you know what color bandana at least one judge wears under his robe.

Watkins was unable to be reached Wednesday because of the holiday. Criminal court judges do not comment on their rulings under any circumstances.

Don’t worry, Judge.  Rest up them pipes.  You’ll have all the time in the world to explain at your impeachment hearing.

CONFUSING UPDATE: Channel 4 is updating the page (linked to above) to now say that Walters is still in jail but that he can still make bond and get out.  I cut-and-pasted directly above but now the page is saying otherwise.  Guess I’ll just screenshot this one from here on out.  The first sentence now reads:

After HillaryCare went down in flames (note that the first thing the socialists do when they gain power is go after healthcare, because it is the golden ticket when it comes to controlling the population and they know it, just ask Hitler) in 1993, the American public expressed its displeasure by kicking the socialist Dim-O-Cracks out on their asses.

It was a time of sweet, sweet gridlock and a movement towards fiscal restraint and BUDGET SURPLUSES.

Limp-wristed and self-serving leadership from dirtbags like Trent Lott and Bill Frist resulted in a GOP majority that couldn’t pass legislation to tie its own shoes, all the while playing the same pay-to-play corruption games that has become the hallmark of governments large and small.

Then in the 2000s, this pathetic GOP leadership found the perfect country-club Republican in George Bush to continue the elitist big-spending cronyism that resulted in more and more giveaways and pandering to special interests. His tenure was complicated by the islamic terrorist attacks of 9/11, but Bush never saw a spending bill he didn’t like – especially if some of those millions were going to his beloved illegals.

To make things many times worse, you had gutless, liberal GOP Senators like McCain, Lispy Graham, Snowe, Hatch, Collins, Spectre, Alexander and others whose only goals were to be praised by the leftist media and avoid any appearance of partisanship. Cowards, liars and crooks, just like their counterparts across the aisle.

This reckless spending and spinelessness resulted in the GOP getting their asses kicked all over the playground in 2006 and 2008. And they STILL DON’T FUCKING UNDERSTAND WHY IT HAPPENED.

Now, thanks to the worst Presidential candidacy since Bob Dole, we have a President who is nothing more than a moronic Marxist union thug from Chicago, surrounded by academics and labor racketeers who hate America and hate Capitalism. Yeah, I went there.

This administration and the other Congressional Communists – Reid, Pelosi, Durbin, Frank, Byrd, Nelson, et al – are rushing to spend as much as possible and pass as much economy crushing legislation as possible because everything they do is opposed by a majority of the American public. It’s now or never to bring down Capitalism once and for all, and they’re getting closer with each 1 am vote.

Some have gone a little further and suggested that the Obamabots are pushing towards an intentional collapse of the economy and monetary system so that the America that we grew up with will be burned down and rebuilt by these same thugs, in their utopian socialist image. When you look at what they’re spending compared to previous eras, it’s hard to argue with them.

At every turn, this administration (in conjunction with its co-conspirators in congress) has been pushing legislation that strips away your liberty and removes your freedom of choice. It’s all geared toward restricting your freedom and shutting down America’s once-great economic engine. Don’t be fooled by their love of the “environment” – the ultimate goal of these people is totalitarian control, not saving the planet from their own manufactured junk science.

Now the GOP is standing around with their finger in their collective ass wondering how they are going to stop this Marxist freight train. They have one of two choices: (1) merge with the tea-party movement and put the constitution, limited government, spending restraint and budget slashing above all else, and pledge a blood oath to REPEAL everything they can, including healthcare OR (2) relegate themselves to the dustbin of history while a new third party emerges that is focused on returning this country to its roots of self-reliance, limited government, federalism and the well-designed limitations of the Constitution.

If history is any indicator, you can go ahead and purchase your sympathy card for the GOP’s next of kin.

Did you hear the one about all U.S. oil companies being frozen out of the bidding on Iraqi oil reserves and them being awarded to Russia and China thus rewarding the accomplices who helped Saddam Hussein break every UN sanction placed on him while enslaving the country?

Those who claim that the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003 to get control of the country’s giant oil reserves will be left scratching their heads by the results of last weekend’s auction of Iraqi oil contracts: Not a single U.S. company secured a deal in the auction of contracts that will shape the Iraqi oil industry for the next couple of decades. Two of the most lucrative of the multi-billion-dollar oil contracts went to two countries which bitterly opposed the U.S. invasion – Russia and China – while even Total Oil of France, which led the charge to deny international approval for the war at the U.N. Security Council in 2003, won a bigger stake than the Americans in the most recent auction.

How could this happen one might incredulously ask.  Why, why, why?  Look to the usual suspects and their actions from a year ago:

Why, after all the assistance we’ve given to Iraq over the past five years, was the first major Iraqi oil deal signed with China and not with an American or even a western company? The answer is, in part, because three Democratic senators intervened in Iraqi domestic politics earlier this year to prevent Iraq from signing short-term agreements with Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total, Chevron, and BP.

… Senators Chuck Schumer, John Kerry, and Claire McCaskill wrote a letter to Secretary of State Rice asking her “to persuade the GOI [Government of Iraq] to refrain from signing contracts with multinational oil companies until a hydrocarbon law is in effect in Iraq.” The Bush administration wisely refused to do so, but the resulting media hooraw in Iraq led to the cancellation of the contracts, and helps to explain why Iraq is doing oil deals instead with China.

Their release (available along with their letter to Secretary Rice at the New York Observer quoted Senator McCaskill as follows: “‘It’s bad enough that we have no-bid contracts being awarded for work in Iraq. It’s bad enough that the big oil companies continue to receive government handouts while they post record breaking profits. But now the most profitable companies in the universe–America’s biggest oil companies–stand to reap the rewards of this no-bid contract on top of it all,’ McCaskill said. ‘It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to connect these dots–big oil is running Washington and now they’re running Baghdad. There is no reason under the sun not to halt these agreements until we get revenue sharing in place,’ McCaskill said.

Yea, those multi-national American oil companies are running Baghdad aren’t they?  China, Russia and the French are getting the run of the Iraqi roost because Democrats preferred that the oil go to the people who undermined the effort to free their people every inch of the way rather than an American company to make a profit.  Remember that when they speak of “The perfect becoming the enemy of the good.”

Especially when it’s coming from the relentless enemies of the good.
